Need info on angels...

Okay I brokedown and bought two at the LFS tonight. A golden (could be pearl) veil tail and a zebra veil tail. ZOMGZ are they gorgeous. They seem to be fine with ech other. They currently are swimming closely by each other. I moved some stuff around in my 20gal high so that they had more open swimming room (my driftwood used to cut the tank in two now I have it sitting in the corner). I still have my other fishies in there (a school of 5 rummy nosed tetras, 4 redtailed rasboras, a black lyretail molly, 1 black swordtail, 1 platy, 2 cory cats.) All seem to be getting along fine. I can see them floating gracefully along together from my chair across the room. Darn they are sooo pretty. I get too excited about my fishies ;)

I just picked up a pair of angels last night (not sure on sex). will they be ok with a pleco 5 red wag platties and 4 black mollies in a 55g moderatly planted?
Yes.
Should i pick up another pair soon before they take over?
You cannot predict when they'll take over as a pair. Sexing is impossible until spawning season comes. They should have their tube showing during spawning season. Males have tubes with pointed tip and positioned forward whereas females have rounder tip and positioning backward.

you may be fine with the two you have. with angels it can be difficult to determine how they will reac as they mature..the only issue I have had is with an over dominant male..they tend to pick on all other males in the tank..even some females..with females you stand a better chance they will get along.

so the two in a 55 should be fine..
do you know which species of pleco you have?
some of them will outgrow a 55.

Just a common Pleco as far as i know. it was listed as just a pleco. i will try to get some pics later.

But now i have to go back as one of the angels died over night. he was wierd since i put it in. it would never eat and never moved from the same area unlike my other angel who is pretty active even though he is being picked on by a very small black molly. so im off to get a replacement. i kinda dissappointed as ive only had them less than 36 hours

sometimes angels stress easily

do you have a qt tank?

while angels are graceful and beautiful they also are prone to specific infections/parasites(commonly camillanus and capillaria) I always take my angels in qt and treat them with parasite meds to clear them..(prazi,matronidazole and levamisolehcl)
while a healthy angel can fend off the effects of an infestation..a stressed angel will have difficulties. how large are these angels..I usually recommend small nickel to quarter size ..this size seems to be fairly adaptable to changes.

if you have a common plec..keep in mind they can vary in size from 11" to over 20" if you are having issues with angels from a lfs..try looking for a local breeder..

No qt tank. other than a 1g fish bowl. haven't had the extra $ to set up a qt although its certainly a thought now. the angels i bought were sm-md size they didnt have anything any smaller.

but now i def. think the lfs angels have some issues as i just traded it out and had the same problem with the second one i brought home. was fine for about 4 hours and didn't even last 8 hours in the tank. so now i am contemplating just leaving the single angel since the other one is still goin and im not having luck with a 2nd.

i love angels will they be good in a 29 gallon i dont think they will be

could be..could be difference in water to.

what method of acclimation are you using??
can you test the water the fish come in and see if there is a noticable difference in water?

but just so you know..the LFS does not get the 'best' quality stock.. breeders tend to keep the best for breeding and trade/sell many of their higher quality fish..the LFS is not willing to pay what the stock is worth...who would? given the chance that the person buying the fish may not have the best back ground.

see if you can find a breeder nearby.

I have to go with Dangerdoll on this one. I had two breeding pairs in my forty gallon breeder tank and the females would get jelous of one another. They seemed to lay eggs at alternate times and when one would lay them the other female would storm the other side of the tank and eventually eat them. The two females did this to one another constantly and it just got to the point where it was like watching an episode of Jerry Springer with all the fighting going on. I'm currently looking for ideas on new fish as my centerpiece....lol
