So I recently lost all my neons and my betta (the first fish I bought for my tank quite some time ago, so I'm assuming it's an old age thing. the other inhabitants in the tank are well and the water paramaters are all fine) and I haven't had a chance to look into what I should replace them with.

Right now in the tank there are 2 plecos (1 ABN and 1 clown, neither of which are larger than 2-3"), a pair of ADFs, and the ramshorns.

Since I'm pretty much over the top of bottom dwellers, I'd like to look into something for mid-top dwelling fish. Something to take the betta's place really, since my neons spent more time near the bottom than the top.

I don't really know if I'm looking for a schooling fish or a pair or something of larger fish (I was think of maybe a pair of angels).

any suggestions are welcome :)

It depends what you want realy.
If you want strictly top dwelling fish then hatchetfish are good and fun to watch, although you will need a tight fitting lid.
For general upper level, gouramis are funny and have personality.
If the tank is big enough, get both!
Hatchet will need at least 6, although more are better.
Gpuramis are depending on the species. Dwarf should only have one male per tank, whereas some others can be kept in groups.

I'm thinking of gouramis. Any particular species? I know there are a whole bunch, but I'm more concerned for compatibility issues

Small tank, pair of dwarfs would be the best bet. Larger species (pearl or blue) wouldn't be a good idea, no more than a single male if you must.

for dwarfs does it matter if it's 2 males or 2 females or 1 and 1?
