Need your opinions on a smaller dog

awww, this is the first post I seen where you refer to Rosie as your wife! :D So sweet!

What about a corgi (if you have time to play with it and give it alot of exercise)

I would say get a Jack Russell Terrier just because I had one & I'm bias
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ILzSzqWR6U. But honestly they can be a bit much for the first time dog owner. They are small, but have tons of energy & need a lot of walking & stimulating (e.g. playing, exercise).

But Taysius brings up good points. Small doesn't necessarily = less maintenance. Small dogs still require grooming, exercise, etc. The thing to know here is not size but their specific breed traits & requirements, so do your research (like she suggested). Also like Taysius already brought up, you can get some great dogs from rescue shelters (that is were I got Jerry - the JRT).

And coach_z is absolutely right about training. Whatever breed you get, make sure you are willing to put in the time to train it right. A lot of people neglect to train small dogs appropriately because they deem them small & harmless & as a result they go on to develop aggression problems & other bad habits. This can also be a real problem if you have or plan on having kids in the future. A co-worker of mine has a grandson who had to receive multiple stitches (circa 20 - 30) in the face due to getting torn up by a .... Pitbull??? NO!! a Dachshund. Was it the breeds fault? NO!! Proper traing on behalf of both the dog & humans could have avoid it (IMO/exp - small children around 6 & under should never be left unsupervised with dogs, big or small).

Visit the animal shelters and take a lease so you can ask to walk a dog you see and take hearing protection for the kennel barking. The best dogs most intelligent, healthiest from bread genetic mutations, appreciatively-loyal come from mixed breeds and adult dogs experienced in street life. I have owned both man-bred and naturally mixed bred dogs, and by far mixed and prior life experienced adult dogs were the more useful, obedient, and less troublesome, and free from AKC diseases. Plus you'll be saving an otherwise good animal from destruction. But take the time to check them out in all ways by asking to take the dog for a walk around the the shelter to inspect the animal on the leash for abnormalities and temperament. You'll also be saving a ton of money over man-bred dogs short and long term, money you can spend toward your family.

^^ Thanks... I'm not against getting a mixed breed. Corgis are cute too! Will be checking those out.

Sailed NJ, a friend of mine has 2 jack russels and a 3 year old kid at home. Needless to say, when i go to his condo, it looks like they're all on way too much caffiene. lol and it doesn't stop ! I think a JR is a little too energetic for us.

rat terriers are great looking too!

Jinksy, my WIFE!! imagine.. Feels weird esaying it! lol .

I have two miniature Shnauzers. They are great pets and very smart. The only down side to them is the regular trip to the groomer. They do not shed so need regular hair cuts. There is also a tendency in the breed for bad teeth so regular appointments with the vet for cleaning is a must. If you go with them you will love them, they are all personality.

 I know I know but like I said, I'm bias lol. A lot of the other breeds people are suggesting would definitely be a better fit, excluding beagles (unless you like baying at all times of the day) like Taysius mentioned, nice dog, just very boisterous.

And you can't forget the mutts, gotta love them.

Good luck with choosing a dog. As long as you're willing to give it the training & attention it requires (and deserves) you won't go wrong with whichever breed/mix breed you choose.

Go with a basset hound. Small, but not a lapdog, and when they bark, it's got some oomph to it...not like other little yappy dogs.

As a kid, we had a basset, and she was really easy-going. Liked to play, but liked to lay around a lot too.

I totally agree. We have two Winston and YODA and they are wonderful dogs. They're my favorite breed. Great personalities and great with kids.

OK well I have a Bischon Frise - they are small, they are white - BUT mine is pretty BA lmao - he is by no means snotty, and is(was, when he could hear) a better guard dog than my big baby of a Labrador/Malamute/Standard Poodle Mix. He is much more content in the dirt than he ever would be in the show ring and doesn't shed at all, or have the dander that people are allergic to lol. It really depends on the temperament of the dog, regardless of breed - you could have a ferocious Bischon, or a wimpy Doberman lol.
