Need your opinions on a smaller dog

I have a Jack Russel/Yorkie mix ("Jorkie") and while they certainly have a tendency to be hyper at times, it isn't ALL the time...just 98% of the time...:D

But they are great dogs. Smart, easy to train, and will absolutely love being outside whenever you give them the chance. I push her around all the time and they love "fighting back." Most playful dog I have ever had, but they will tire out eventually LOL.

Just my 2 cents.

Extremely affectionate, intelligent and OMG bossy. I have a baby on the way and my biggest fear about that is my dachshund. They are known to bite at the vet and have one heck of a prey drive. Great, friendly little dogs with big attitudes that I have yet to figure out how to keep in check. I worked with a girl who owned a dachshund. Tiny little thing named "Peanut," but the dog was vicious as all heck...a downright nasty little thing. Such a bad temperament that she ended up having to put the thing down.

"Just 98% of the time"? That's it? That 2% Yorkie must account for that slacker gene in your pooch. lol

Taysius, I didn't mention the Dachshund specifically because of the breed but because of people's tendency to overlook & ignore behavioral issues in smaller breeds that they would never overlook in larger ones. Unfortunately that story I shared is probably not that unique & has occurred over & over again with many other breeds that people label as innocuous.

Yeah I only commented on it because I can easily see it happening and have one of my own. Not saying my own would do that, knock on wood, but she has snapped at me 3 times in her 5 and a half years.

ALSO - Not to hijack or derail this thread but congrats Taysius on your expected arrival!! Do you guys know what you are expecting (i.e. sex) or are you settling for the "surprise"?

Awesome happy dogs, devoted, loving, energetic (yet NOWHERE near as energetic as the cousin Jack Russel), SMART & so incredibly easy to train, long lifespans and have very few, if any health issues related to breed unlike most others. I may be bias, but they really are amazing dogs! :dance2:

I have a welsh terrier which is 12 years old and is a GREAT dog! When he was younger he liked to run (even though it ment down the street) a fenced in yard is a must. Really any of the terriers are good, smart dogs that don't shed. If you've never had dogs, however, I wouldn't recomend them. They are somewhat hard to train so maybe a poodle or something similar.

Whatever you decide, check your local shelters first. Most of the dogs there make great pets and they will be able to tell you how much they shed, how often (and for how long) the walks should be and all that good stuff.

I have to disagree with this, I've owned quite a few different terriers that did not live up to the "terrorizer" & stubborn title most people give them, and were incredibly easy to train. So this may be true for some, but not ALL.
 
You might try a pekingese. My Mom had a brown one when I was little, very smart very loyal dog -- also doubles as a vacuum & mop when the occasion calls for it ;)
