Neon help!! Possible NTD?

I just moved 2 into a 2.5 gallon tank I have. I used all water from the tank they were in, some of the gravel from the tank and a whisper filter from a tank I had a betta in, hoping to avoid a cycle. I was thinking about watching the rest of the neons over the next day or two and moving them if they look sick. I am just so frustrated because I have had some of them for a while and I haven't lost any fish for a year or so(except for two: a suicide  and a molly that was ill since I got it)

A fish suicide??? Do tell !

I had a rainbow shark that found the tiniest gap imaginable at the back of the tank. Needless to say, I found him too late :( . He was extremely aggressive, and he was going to be returned to the LFS if the trial run in the bigger tank didn't work out... Guess he didn't want to give it a try.

But I am still after neon advice for those who read this, :bowing:

i had like 6 neons in my tank and when i turned the light on after its been off all night thewere all pale....but when they got active again their color came back

Well it's late for me ,early for most everyone else, but I'll do my best to relate my NTD exp with you. I'm still a newb in my opinion but I've had alot of sucess over the last year and have a healthy tank now. About 5-6 months ago I had NTD in my tank and I lost my neons, likely 10-14 total I didn't catch it and just kept replacing them when one died not understanding how contagous it was. Once I pinned it down to NTD and started reading up on what I could do it came down to the last six I tried to save. I didn't have a Q tank and regret to say still don't. I chose the hard choice of euthenizing the fish that had NTD since there wasn't a cure. What I watched for was a color loss in the red part of the fish. The first two or three I killed as soon as I saw it. I know it sounds creul but I didn't have any other option. After I came to the last three or four I just gave up. It didn't spread to my other fish and to date I haven't even seen a good source of what fish , other then tetras, that it can infect. So I just let it run it's course. I was left with one neon that managed to either avoid infection or developed an imunity to it. I left him as the lone neon for well over a two months then impulse bought 3 more neons to finish my tank stock off. So far after about a month all are doing well so hopefully the infection is gone and over with. (Note I did buy a new larger tank and cleaned everything very well before I moved them into it and later bought the new neons). I wish I had good news for you but I'm guessing even with agressive action on your part to stem the tide in your favor. You'll still lose most if not all of the neons. It's a horrible desease to have break out. It's also a prime example of why a Q tank is so important. My sympathy goes out to you mate.

Thanks Neo, the QT tank isssue is also bothering me because I would not have kept them QT'd for 2-3 months, which is how long I"ve had the newest ones, so it seems like the QT tank would not have done me any good in this case anyway  !!! I'm keeping an eye on them and plan to move them as I see they are infected. I'm still hoping that I won't lose them all, but...
Plus I would really like to try them again if I do lose them all, but now I'll be paranoid!! I had 8 of them for over a year and had not lost any that I had bought, now :(

I hope you don't lose them all either. I guess the Q tank is mute when the out break is after 3 months I think after q few months with out the desease you may be able to get neons back in the tank. A more exp person could tell you more on thet but so far I seem to be clear. Best of luck.

Could they be having problems b/c of really high nitrates?? I never expected them to be so high b/c the rest of my tank conditions are ideal. I know neons can be somewhat sensitive, so that is my last guess at a problem!! The 2 I moved to QT are still alive, acting normal. The 8 still in the tank look fine, and are actually schooling better than they used to.
