I've kept about 16 neon tetras by now. almost all have been in my 55g open hood planted tank. I've lost almost most of them and only have 5. The thing is most of the tetras have jumped out of the tank O.o Out of all the fish I have the least likely to jump was suppose to be neon tetras. I have kuhlii loaches and a king betta that have never done it but the tetras have.

According to this :http://www.aquariumfreeze.com/tetra-fish/neon-tetra/ it just so happens that during spawning they get jumpy. I have noticed that all my neons that have jumped are FEMALES. I can tell because they are plump, and the blue stripe isn't straight like a males. I just find it surprising that my neons are so peaceful and were suppose to be the easiest to take care of yet the are suicidal >.< I even have zebra danios and have never seen one jump lol.

I only have a few Neons in my 100 uncovered tank. I have never lost a neon to jumping. The only fish that have jumped (and lucky I was next to my tank a the time) was a bleeding heart.

That's so weird....I started out with 5 neons over a year ago and am now down to 2, those things are so darn fragile. I have never had an issue with them jumping, or even seen one break the water surface for that matter.

I actually just lost another tetra right now. Was fixing my dogs bed which is under my big tank and there it was. A dried up neon tetra. I'm down to 4 O.o I don't get it. The tank is heavily planted with plenty of hiding spots and I feed them such a variety of food ranging from blood worms, mosquito larvae, brine, tetramin, NLS pellets.

I mean I won't really care at this point if I lose the remaining 4 due to jumping but I won't be keeping neon tetras without a hood. I really wonder if it is because they are trying to mate? I'm baffled.

Any mid/top dwellers, even bottom dwellers can jump when spooked by shadows/sudden movements and vibrations in the middle of the night. Sometimes due to fast moving tankmates as well.

Why dont you drop the water level a bit?

Always had some out of thousands jumped from time to time when kept in with fast movers/vibration at night, even with lid as they somehow find the smallest gaps/openings which seemed impossible for them to find to go Carpet Diving.

Dont know how long you had them but check their tankmates as some fish can dash around the tank in middle of the night caused by vibration/shadows which in turn can spook other tankmates.

Afa due to spawning possibility, yes, they are very active during spawning but I dont recall such losses ime as I did not filled any opened tank to the rim and I hope they dont think theyre splashing tetra, lol!

Should prep spawning tank if desired.

Good Luck!

I would remove them to a safer location except I only have 4 and no space. My decision might sound cruel but I'll leave it as it is. With 4 neon tetras left I think I'll just let them do what they do. Spooked tetras can not be the case because I am the only one in my room and most of the time I'm staring at my tv playing online. I live with my grandparents so they aren't very active either. I've had this tank running for 8 months now.

IMO lowering the water line wouldn't do anything. The more depth the more speed they can pick up and jump higher. This is a 55g tank and I would need to have the tank half filled to not let them jump out. Its funny, I have a betta sorority adjacent to this tank and my male betta hasn't jumped over. He does flirt with the ladies though.
