I currently have a 46 gallon setup, with 8 African cichlids. I purchased a 10gallon setup because I want to have something different. Everything is in, water is in, been in for around 20 hours or so. I added water conditioner, and bacteria starter. I have a bubble wand at the bottom, and a small filter system it came with.
What kinda fish do you suggest I put in there. Also, how long should I wait before I put any type of fish in there? A week? A month? Can I put fish in there today?

Do you have a heater?

You can put fish in it right away, but.....you will have to keep a very close watch on the ammonia & nitrite levels as the bio-load builds up. At any sign of ammonia or nitrite you will have to do water changes. Are you familiar with how to monitor these things as your tank cycles? If not, I'll find you some links for cycling-with-fish instructions.

Shoot, I forgot to mention...since you have a bigger tank that's already established, you can use it to kick-start the cycle on the 10 g tank. Just take a couple scoops (1-2 cups) of the gravel and put it into the the new tank. Shouldn't take too much for a 10g.

People with an established tank have a big advantage over people starting off on their first. :thm: Good luck!

If I had a new 10g, I might try some small tetras. Its really a preference thing for you though. My 10 g has neons, corys, and a female american flagfish. They are all very interesting. I would go to the Species Profiles page and see what interests you. AQ Central Freshies then research them and/or post back here to see what people think about compatibility, etc.

My fancy guppies are interesting to watch too...and the babies have started getting their colors, so its very exciting for a nerdy-fish guy. :read:

hmm

well I have a 10 that I cycled that has a blue and red betta floating in his plastic bag aclimating to the water temp right now. I am thinking I will put a few corries in with him later.

You can pretty much instantly cycle the tank by taking some of your filter media from the established tank and putting it in the 10g filter. Another option is letting the filter from the 10g tank run on your 46g tank for about 2 weeks. Adding some of the gravel from the established tank will definately help, but I don't think it would be enough to "cycle" the tank, so you would still need to monitor the levels VERY closely

Since you don't know what kind of fish you want anyway, I would just let the new filter run on your established tank and use the time to research. It is much easier to do things right the first time, than to find out you've bought fish that get too large for your tank and end up stuck later down the road!Good luck

Should I just use this tank as a small community fishtank, or should I do a few bigger fish? Whats the best thing to do with a tank so small

For a 10-g, a 2-inch fish is considered big, so you are pretty limited. I have green swordtails that are over 2-inches....they are community fish, but would never be happy with only 10g. Some fish need a lot of swimming room, others, like neons, just need a group of more than 6 to be comfortable. It takes a bit of research.
