New 320 Gallon Thread!!!

the guy actually had to sell it not only due to lack of time(his young kids and work), but because his "wife didnt share his enthusiasm".. i think thats a bummer : \

inka, your talk of big piles of driftwood and big amazon swords is getting me excited hahah. that's exactly what i picture in my noggin. for the stock i have to work around the Oscars, but one day I'll have a mix of small-medium sized fish, a bunch of schoolers. the amazon is on my top 3 list of favorite biotopes, might even be first. im always thinking about where to get stuff and just imagining the set-up.
the only thing is i cant decide on a substrate.. sand or something dark and dirt-like, like "amazonia aquasoil" or "ADA Amazonia", whatever it's called.
 
I was told on an apisto forum that most do not appreciate a light colored substrate, but that is probably because they live over leaf litter in nature. That's probably not terribly feasible in an oscar tank though... Not very well versed in the behavior of the bigger cichlids here, having never had the space to keep them, but what are your proposed theoretical tankmates?
 
yeah, i dont really like the reflectiveness of the light colored substrates, but my fish is dark and i can barely see him now with a black background and charcoal SMS. im thinking ill go with... i dont know! i have been trying to decide between basically light(but not too light) sand or a dark soil type substance forever. im still no closer to making a decision than i was when i started weighing out the pros and cons. im going to have to look at a bunch of pictures soon. plus, there will be lots of plants and DW on the bottom.. i think im leaning towards sand now, but ill change my mind and be unsure again in a couple of days lol.
for tankmates for the 3 Os i would love some small, amazon native schoolers and maybe a couple of medium-sized fish that could hold their own against the Os. i need to do some research, didnt know my current aquaria dream would be coming true this quickly. i am planning on a DIY bkg with space between the background and tank wall, with holes or spaces here and there just big enough for the small fish to fit in.. a refuge from the big, hungry Os. when they want to come out from behind the bkg, im going to set up the bottom with driftwood piles and plants so they can take refuge there as well. hopefully not too many casualties.
this isnt going to happen until after i move though, im keeping it simple until then. its already going to be hard to move anyways. so the first setup will be a simple setup with a few oscars, then when i get into the new place ill make it exactly how i picture it

......Oscars go to LFS; trade for some plants. 50 Neons; 3-5 Ancistrus. Any Apistogrammas you can get. Another 50 rummy noses and so on.
You have a choice 2-5 big fish or 100dreds of small fish. IMHO loads of smalls are better than 2-5 bigs.....and you can keep adding!!!

It's all a matter of opinion, but I would actually agree. You did forget the school of 50 cories though. :drool:
