New 38g Aquarium - need filter advice

I just bought a 38 gallon tank and could use a little advice on the filter.

The tank came with an Aqueon filter (not sure what the model is - it doesn't even say on the filter itself!). My friend told me that the filter was terrible and that I needed one with a Biowheel - so I went out and purchased a Marineland Penguin 200.

The problem now is the noise! The motor isn't loud at all, but the splashing of the water is very, very loud! Also, when the cover of the tank is off water starts splashing out of the tank from the filter.

I added water to the tank to try to quiet it down but to no avail - it is just as loud, and the water level is as high as it will go. I noticed that if I stop the biowheel from spinning the sound significantly decreases.

Does anyone know of any decent filters that are quieter? Could the Aqueon filter (which was much quieter) not be as bad as suggested?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

On my marineland there are adjustable sprayers for the biowheel that make most the noise if you just tweak it a little it will make a big difference. It should need just enough to keep the wheel moving.

Do you think you could provide a bit more information about the "adjustable sprayers"? Where are they found?

It seems to me like slowing down the biowheel would be the perfect solution. Any suggestions?

I have the Emperor 400 and it is noisy. I've tweaked the sprayer bar many times to no avail. I've just gotten used to the noise now haha.

Try keeping the water level a little higher to reduce the distance the water falls. This will kill some of the trickling sound. I have a penguin 350 on my 72 and I can hear the motor, not the water.

You should be able to turn the sprayers to change the angle of the spray on the wheel which in turn will speed or slow the wheel. You should adjust it so the wheel barely turns. This may help with the sound and may solve the issues with water splashing out of the tank the water should just fall out of the filter. I would also agree that keeping your water level up will probably help the most.

i have an emp.400 and a penq. 350 biowheel. look at the side on top of the filter there is a small knob to adjust the angle of the spraybar. personally if i dont hear my filters i get nervous.. except for the canisters i dont want them making noise
