Hey everyone. As some of you may know, I recently got a new 55g aquarium. I'm going to do African Cichlids- Lake Malawi specifically as it seems that most of the cichlids I can get around here are Malawis so I thought I might as well do a biotope type setup or as close to I can get to one! I'm taking my time with this one, something I didn't do with my other 3 tanks. I want it to be perfect because this is going to be my last tank (hahaha well we'll see!) and I really wanted to do cichlids because I have grown quite fond of them. This is going to be a "progression thread" as I've seen lots of others doing that so I thought I would try one too! So heres my thoughts for the tank: natural colored gravel (hopefully pea-sized if I can find it) or maybe sand, i'm going to use slate and make a rock structure with lots of holes and things, maybe a few plants- is there anything I can put in there? Java fern maybe? Cabomba? I have a big piece of driftwood thats soaking at the moment so that will be going in there too. I'm going to put a black background on it to make the colors of the fish pop and hide the cords and things. The lighting is pretty bright, i'm not sure what the wpg is, all i know is the light is an Eclipse Natural Daylight?? So yeah, thats my plan so far. I've attached some pics to see how it comes together. I will be updating and adding pictures as I go along. I'm hoping to fill the tank tomorrow if I can get that gravel and get it cycling with media from another filter! The pics are of the tank in the box, the pump and heater, the driftwood, my cat watching me put the stand together and then the last 2 are the finished picture. Thanks for looking and keep checking back!

Looks good, though IMO I'd advise against driftwood in the african tank, especially if it's leaching, which can lower your ph and make your water softer, though it's your choice.

What kind of a filter is that? Looks like an emperor with no bio wheels.

Beautiful piece of driftwood, though I agree with the earlier poster who warned to watch the pH levels -- Africans like it quite high, and the tannins from the wood might lower it a bit.

I love the look on the cat's face: "Yes, my personal servant is setting up a smorgasbord just for me. As it should be." :)

Thanks for the comments. I realize the wood might lower the pH, although, i do have a piece in my 50g. and before I put it in the pH was almst 8.0... and when I put the wood in it didn't come down much at all, it was about 7.7ish I believe. I'm going to put in there and i'll watch the readings for a while and see what happens with the pH. I won't be adding fish right away so that will give me time to see what it does! Thanks! I'll put some more pics up today if I can get that gravel and get it filled up.

Okay so I finished the tank... or for tonight anyway haha. I've been working on it since about 2p.m and its now 12:40am. The gravel is just natural colored gravel from wal-mart. I bought 4- 25lb. bags but only needed 3. I got the slate from a local landscaping business and I knew the guy who owned it so I got it for free. I'm still not totally sure about the plants but I thought that they gave it a little bit of color. I'm going to test the driftwood out for a bit and see how much it plays around with the pH before I decide to keep it or take it out. I'll be getting a black (or blue??) backround for it tomorrow so I won't have to see all the wires. I took a filter pad out of another established tank and put it into the filter on this tank so hopefully that will help it cycle faster. I was wondering, the filter pad doesn't have very much "stuff" on it but will it still be okay for cycling, providing theres not a lot of stuff on it?? Will it be just as fast or take slower? Thanks for looking! I'll put more pics up once I get the fish.

p.s- Are they any live plants I could get that the cichlids wouldn't shred to pieces?? I can get Java Fern, Cabomba, Giant Hygrophilia (I think?) Java Moss, Micro-sword and some kind of normal Sword too. Sometimes I see the odd crypt, which I always have good luck with. I'm sure there are a few others i'm forgetting, but thats basically it.
