New 55g. Malawi- Progression thread

Anubias, java fern and vallesneria go good in an african tank and are pretty hardy, looks good, get more slate in there :)

:iagree:

Africans like lots of rocks with caves and swim-throughs, so you might want some more slate. That's a great piece of wood, btw.

The driftwood lowering the pH is highly overated unless it is a very new piece and in a small tank with infreqyuent water changes. Certain types of would will lend more of a coloring affect than actual pH issues.

I think you will need more rock with holes/caves.

I also would get more filtration, like a small canister.

great so far ! more slate and plants. and yes 1 more filter. I have the big one you have on my 55 gallon tank, and I have one the next size down. don't forget the back ground :)

I would like to do more slate but I can't get anymore as of right now. I'm not in a big city and theres only 2 landscaping places around and the one is where I got this stuff from and the other doesn't have any until summer but maybe i'll be able to find some. If not i'll wait till summer and get some then. I'm going to test out this filter and I do have another smaller filter that I can put on if need be. No, the heater is not buried, I just haven't put it in yet...will be doing that today. The background will be going on today sometime, I just have to go and get it. More plants will be going in the foreground part of the tank but it was late and I was getting tired so I just put those in for now. I have Anubias in my 50g. tank that I got from a Petland 3 hours away so i won't be able to get anymore of it for a while. Could I "split" the Anubias and put in the new tank? Would that work?

Yeah thats what I thought too but everyone was saying i could put a few plants in. I was hoping that if i keep them well fed maybe they'd leave the plants alone? I bought omega one spirulina flakes and kelp/spirulina pellets so hopefully that would work. I was just going to put in a java fern and see what happens. I have so many little plantlets that would work good. Thanks!

great start !

don't worry about the driftwood if you like the look - lots of people use it with malawis with no ill effects.

I would get more rockwork in there, piling it right up to the water level in places. you really can't have too much with malawis - the more caves etc they are the more you will see them, as they will feel secure.

Keep us updated as you go :)

i'll get more rocks in there when i can...looks like it won't be till summer because theres only 2 landscaping places here and they can't get it until summer. I tried home depot but they were all out. :(
