New 55g Tank

I would LOVE to have a tank with some green tiger barbs...they are a very cool looking and pretty little fish. They remind me of the SW damsels..which I also have a liking for. But what on earth can you keep with the barbs that wouldn't get pecked to death by them eventually ???

If I had a 55 I would set it up as a planted community with a small group of discus.....and I would then have to look into keeping a CO2 system on it...lol....so far I've avoided that necessity simply by having smaller tanks and using the flourish excel....

But you are wanting an aggressive tank...hhmm.....gee, everyone goes for cichlids when they want aggressive tanks.........hey, I saw a very cool looking birchir today (I think that's what it was, the store didn't have it labeled properly) ! What a neat looking fish...sort of resembles prehistoric salamander or something. The one I saw looked like an albino, it was a pinkish white color. I think you could do some of those in a 55...but someone who knows more about them would have to tell you for sure. That would be different and interesting Yourwar, though I don't know how aggressive they are.

I have a 55 gallon tank as well, and keep in mind it takes a long time to cycle this tank. Mine has been up and going for 6 weeks and my cycling hasn't finished yet.

How will I know when the cycling is finished? I read the article about Cycle and how it dosn't work but my manager at work swears by it. So many different oppinions?

That is awesome!!!

What size tank would be the minimum for him?

Polypterus senegalus
Size 12" (30cm), but can reach 16" (40cm) in the wild.
Tank setup Large tank, with bogwood and a few plants for decor, sandy substrate
Compatibility Predatory, keep with larger fish.

Feeding Carnivore, feed live foods and dead meaty foods such as earthworms, cockles, mussels and frozen fish such as silversides or whitebait.

May show aggression towards others of its own species, especially if the aquarium does not provide refuges for each fish. Like most bichirs, they have a reputation for escaping from tanks, so use a tight-fitting cover. Will eat small fish.

Jewel Cichlids! Beautifull fish, I'm thinking of getting some for my 55. Also, Jack dempsey, green terror, brichardi, are some that you might want to look into.
Also, if you want to jump start you cycle, Either bio spira, or filter media from an established tank will instantly cycle your tank and you will have to add fish at the same time so the bacteria doesn't die.
