So, I bought a reddish-purple snail at a fish store because of the color. It wasn't moving, but the worker at the store made sure it was alive. It didn't move until last night(about 6 hrs in the tank) and then this morning was again closed up. My other apple snail CRUISES around the tank all the time. I'm just wondering... can my new snail just be lazy? Or is there something wrong?

I normally wouldn't have bought a snail that wasn't moving cuz I LOVE my gold one that moves around so much...

Also, how big do these things get? They were listed as Mystery snails when I bought them, but I'm under the impression that Mystery snails ARE apple snails. I could be wrong.....

Do the 'smell test'. If it stinks, which if it's dead it WILL. Then you know the problem. However, many species of snails go dormant for days. Just keep an eye on it. Try to see if it moves when you feed the tank.

Good luck

It moves, just not very often and is quite slow. It ate a little chunk of tums a bit ago. Maybe it's just lazy??

if its eating and moves sounds ok i have some that crawl all the time and some that dont as much.

Its probably just starving. its unusual to have snails in LFS be fed properly. i would be patient and make sure it continues to eat. Mystery snails are one of hundreds of types of appel snails. Most commonly mystery snails are pomacae bridgesii/diffusa

I agree with Rachel. Annie, if I were you, I'd buy the snails from breeders here rather than the shops. I've read plenty of forum threads to my horror that the snails usually thought to be healthy eventually die after a few days and even weeks. There is no way you will know how the shop accommodates the snails unless you are there on a regular basis nor know where they get their snails from.

I made my snails some snail jello and my new one is devouring it like crazy. They are both acting like kids in a candy store, tripping over each other to get the best morsel! It's looking good so far! How often should I feed?
