I just got some bamboo shrimp for my planted 55g. I got them on the spur of the moment (bad idea... I know) but I have researched them in the past. The first shrimp is about 3" while the second is about 4". One of the shrimp has been hanging out in the amazon sword (first pic). The other has been moving all over the tank, but is foraging on the ground for food. Everywhere that I've read, it says that this is somehow stressfull for the shrimp.

I understand that they are filter feeders and will typically position themselves somewherer near the filter outlet and feed there. Do you think that he/she's doing tis because he's now to the tank and hasn't yet staked out a spot to feed?

When I first got mine, they explored all over the tank. And they scavenged from the bottom of the tank for a bit (I attributed this to them coming from a Petco where they weren't fed properly and were scavenging from the bottom to get food for an extended period of time). Eventually, they took up to filtering next to or below my filter. I don't think it's anything to worry about unless the behavior becomes permanent, could be wrong though.

Mine are form petco too. I just checked on them and they're both perched on something with their fans in the air. YAY!!!

Mine walk around on the bottom sometimes too. When I see them doing that I get a pinch of baby bites (I am not sure what they are called but they are for fry) and stick my hand in the water a little up flow and make sure they get extra. They seem to like it.

Such lovely shrimp :) Foraging for food on the bottom means there is not enough food in the water column(bad). Grind up some flakes and put it in the water flow.

How do I get more food in the flow if it is coming from my filter?

Dump the crushed food in the outflow/out-take area.

I've also had good luck feeding them 'coral' food, frozen phytoplankton, etc. I have about a dozen of them in my 90, and naturally with my neglect, all the females have berried. :( If only the young lived in freshwater!

I got mine about a month ago and for the first day, they explored aound the floor, picking at it until they found their place next to the filter output and powerhead output. I never supplement their feeding, the only food they have is little freshwater plankton naturally found in my water along with any stray piece of fish food they get caught in their fans.
