About the holes in the hood, the only way they can reach it would be to climb the glass or swim to the top. Can they do that?
Probably won't be able to "swim" up there, but they are VERY accomplished climbers. If you have plants, tubes, cables, or even excess silicone in a corner the little guy will probably be able to climb up. So, make sure the holes are small or taped over.

As you watch him, you'll get a better idea for what he can climb on, how well, etc.

Now i'm worried....

Crayfish Escapism

Crayfish can easily swim to the top of a tank, then once up there hook on to the rim and crawl around until they find a way out. Mine also does climb the corners by using his smaller back claws to grab the soft silicone (there IS no excess, he just digs right in to it). They can also climb air hoses, heaters (which I know you probably don't have), filter tubes, ANYTHING.

Once they have escaped they are nearly impossible to find, and can travel quite a distance "on foot".

One of my friends has a turtle and he feeds it crayfish. When they are attempting to escape the turtle, they jet backwards with their tails. I have seen them do this so fast they jump clear out of the water and bang into the glass lid on top of the tank.

Fair thee warned!

True, although IME the manner in which a crayfish swims is more akin to a series of spasmatic gestures that toss the critter about the aquarium in a relatively inaccurate and unpredictable nature. In other words, while they can move very quickly across relatively large distances, it's not a primary means of movement unless they're spooked by something. Left to his own devices, Gumbo (my cray) merely crawls his way to the top (perhaps he's not as bright or athletic as yours?). ;)

Interesting though... I had thought he managed to climb in the corners just because of some sloppy silicone application. Now that I think about it, you're probably right... Anything that offers a slightly gummy surface is sufficient. Even then, though, he never gets more than about 12" up before falling back... that is, unless there is a plant for him to grab a hold of.

Regardless, they are very accomplished climbers requiring great care in securing the aquarium that houses them. They like to get out, but need water to survive.

Um... I don't think you have to worry about it being saltwater. Crayfish = freshwater, lobsters = saltwater (that doesn't include blue "lobsters" sold at petco, those are actually crayfish) If you caught them from the wild you should know anyways. Did you catch him on the beach or a creek, pond?
