C'mon people. Why is everybody willing to eat my new pet. :(

This feller is certainly willing to eat em'...

I bought this guy a few years ago...The LFS was calling him an Australian Bue...

I love crawfish but unfortunately they are really just a menu item in most of my tanks...

newbie question: are crayfish community friendly? do they attack smaller fish/ eat pet shrimp? :/

It depends on the species in question. Both peaceful "dwarf" species and highly predatory aquascape-rearrangers are available.

Just to prevent any confusion - the previous link refers to shrimp of the genus Macrobrachium.

And boy does my crayfish rearrange. It's like watching a bulldozer at work. I am sometimes worried that he's going to undercut the driftwood and crush himself.

are the peaceful "dwarf" kinds available in most pet stores? I already have a frog and a shrimp, may as well throw something else odd into my tiny little tank.

Peaceful with crayfish is a relative term. It would not be a good idea to try putting one in with a frog or a shrimp. Mine is peaceful, he is peacefully munching away on a ghost shrimp right now (those are what I feed him so he ignores my fish!) :D

As with any other fish-pet-person, personality varies among individuals of the same species. The crayfish whose pic is posted in the fisr post, is pretty active and everytime I get close to the tank, it will spread his claws and take an offensive stance. However, I have another one there too, whics pretty much hides all day long.

Hmmm... crayfish. I did see a "Blue" one at my LFS and thought about it for a few minutes then never did again.

How would one fair in a 45G tank with 5 balas?

fine with hiding places probably, little guys are survivors. If not, well I get mine free , and watching fish hunt them would be great entertainment.
