Elli, is it possible for you to find someone who has a pond to house the fish in? It's the best choice for your fish and there are many other fish that will suit your tank sizes better.

:welcome: to AC!

By the way, where are you located? Many here in AC and even GAB may be willing to house the comet for you.

I did the whole fish tank in the dorm room thing and IME it was a HUGE hassle. Power cords/ strips that have to meet the building code ( they are pretty strict in a dorm ) the fact that the rooms are small so arranging them is a pain, and once a tank is set up and you have to move it again is going to be even worse. I love fish but I really don't recommend them in a dorm. On top of the maintenance they need and your studying/social life, it could cause issues with the roommate etc..... Oh and water changes those will be fun when you have to haul water from a community bathroom (ew) down the hall to your room.

sorry thats rambly, it was just a real pain to have one. My dorm room was fairly large (15X20ft) and had it's own bathroom and water changes still sucked.

Just some things to think about, best of luck

I think you could easily have a 5g tank with a single betta in your dorm room with no problems. As for hauling water back and forth, establish your tank beforehand and you can buy jugs of water and condition them as you like, less often then you would need to if you try to fish-in cycle.

It would probably provide more relaxation then hassle if gone about the right away..

Welcome to AC! Goldfish actually need quite a lot of care compared to some fish. Is there anyone who would take your goldie to give it proper care and housing? Maybe put it in the classified section here on AC? I do not think you're irresponseable just a beginner. We all make a bad choices now and then. As long as we try to rectify the mistake we have made. Just do the best you can and enjoy your hobby.

I lived in probably a 10'x10' room (the smallest possible on campus no doubt) and had a 15 gallon situated on my dresser. Did weekly water changes by filling up a bucket and trucking down to the community bathroom. Got some weird looks but I had it figured out where most of the people in my hall were in class at the time LOL.

But (isn't there always a but?) it really depends on your personal living situation, your course load, your roommate, etc. I lucked out in all departments and found it a great way to keep a little normalcy in my life since everything you are used to basically goes out the window for those months out of the year that you are at school. A 10 gallon is a good size to throw on a desk or other piece of furniture but I would still not put a comet or any other goldfish in there unless there is absolutely no other home for it by the time you leave.

To be honest, I would venture to guess that bettas are actually easier to care for than goldies especially when placed in a smaller tank. I say I am only guessing because it's been a while since I've kept either (and never in a responsible way). The only change would be you need a heater since they like tropical temps in the upper 70's.

I hope this helps make the situation a little easier and less stressful since moving away will turn out to be 100x more stressful than you intend it to be!

I had a betta and I know exactly what they need ... I'll do that but I will try to find the little guy a new home if not now then I will grow him out and find him a better home next fall ... I personally like bettas but he was so cute lol... I'll find a safe place for him :)

^excellent

If you feel like being adventurous and have grown plants before you can always try a planted female betta tank. I've got 4 in a 10 gallon that after a little bit of early arguing get along well.

Don't feel too bad about the goldfish. When I first started out I had 4 comets, a bala shark, an angelfish, a common pleco, and some mollies in a 15 gallon tank. This was pre-internet days when there really wasn't much easy info to get on keeping fish. I'm glad to see that you are looking information up on how to care for them instead of just having repeated toilet funerals.

I know this is gonna sound terrible because I know the tank isn't even big enough for him... But if I can't find him a home for a while I'll get him a buddy for his mental health ... Hopefully though I can just find a friend who will take him. Is anyone on here from the US?

Wow ... You can really keep four females in a tank that small? I was gonna plant it with anacharis ... And I don't want them to hurt each other ... My male and female killed each other. I will never trust petstore advice again

I wouldn't advise adding another fish to the situation, because when the time does come you will have 2 fish to have to find a new home for. Not to mention goldies produce A LOT of waste, even when they are that small.
