New goldfish tank questions

Those aren't past breeders? Or individuals that were kept in hopes they would be good enough to breed? I doubt they are keeping and growing them to such large size simply to sell them at a larger size, it is not cost effective.

Actually, you are indisputably wrong on this point. At least in terms of high end goldfish it's extremely cost effective for goldfish to be grown out to the biggest size possible. Generally, the better the conformation, the longer they will hold onto the fish before sale. All things considered equal, which do you think creates a bigger profit margin, letting go a 3.5" fish with perfect conformation for a marginal price, or holding onto that same fish for a few months, growing it out to the 6"+ range and all of the sudden being able to ask hundreds more for it. It's good to remember that assumptions made on preconceived notions don't always have much correlation with the reality of the nature of things.

Thank you

Thank you all vary much for the advice. I will start searching the classifieds for a much bigger tank and hold off on the white clouds. At least it looks like I have a few years to put everything together on a new tank before I need to move them. I agree vary much on the “buy fish for the size tank you have”, I have kept many tropical fish over the years and tend to keep smaller ones to keep everything affordable. Now my rosy and gold barbs will get a 37 gallon and be much happier when I move them to it. I have only had one goldfish before, I was a kid and it was in a bowl poor thing never had a chance. But I am learning that they are not the easy put water in and forget them fish. These were given to me as a take them or I am going to flush them deal. So I will due every thing that I can to get them the home that they need. Plus I have named them and can’t get rid of them now.

Thanks again

Bert

I know Im late for pics haha. Heres my petsmart oranda. Shes I believe 1.5years old, compared to a 2" black moore. Shes a beast. IMO if your fancies aint this big in 2 years or less you are stunting it. The black moore has already doubled its size since I bought it a month or so ago.

GOOD FOR YOU!!! Can't wait to see what you do with it :)

I don't think a few months jumps a 'marginally priced' 3.5" goldfish to a 6" multi-hundred dollar goldfish. I think a lot of these, not necessarily all, are sold after they are not chosen as breeders or show individuals but are still of the highest quality (the breeder or shower just has even better that they want to focus on or make room for others).

goodness so much debate. i just like owning fish lol

speaking with a lot of authority for someone who chooses not to delve into the world of high end goldfish...

BakerBert-- Thanks for taking care of them. They really are a beautiful fish when they are properly taken care of. A full grown goldfish in prime health swimming across the tank is mesmerizing.

Just ask anyone that comes to visit me..
me "So what are you up to?"
Them "Hmmmmm..... What was that? Sorry I was looking at your fish."

I'm just sorry that you have to start with the ugly fancy breeds like the ones Flaringshutter posted.

lmao V... Watch it buddy. My fancies cost so much because they come with laser vision.
