NEW IMPROVED FILTER OR JUNK ? ? ?

I was speculating about the pearls ("I was thinking that the pearls are nothing more then resin"). I admit I did not read the details because it seems impossible to have a powerful enough back flush from a small HOB pump. However I suppose you could archive the same results by back flushing any filter by using an external pump on a canister out flow port and running the inflow port to drain. Theoretically a significant amount of the dirt would be back flushed but not enough to satisfy me.

Most water filtration back flush systems require high pressures of 130-250 PSI to be truly effective.
 
it's a good idea for a filter. it reminds me of the huge commercial towers i have seen at the local water treatment plant. except, of coure, they use gravel, sand, and a few other materials. 90 bucks though is alot of money. that's the kicker. otherwise, a cool idea.
 
It seems that this works on the same principle as a UGF, however in the form of a HOB. Instead of passing thru gravel your filtering is done by passing through "sintered glass pearls". I don't know about how much water it could effectively filter, I have no doubt that it would filter to some degree.

Why you have to buy 2 of them is beyond me. Why $89. for two?
 
Not to be a buzz kill but if it were so wonderful why is "Tiny's on Ebay" the only place sellin' them? I've heard it mentioned here before that every year or so somebody comes out with something new that you never have to clean or some such hootle and they usually don't prove out.

'Course if you're as wealthy as has been intimated, you should probably buy six or eight so you can let your friends try them out too.

What is that old adage ...if it sounds too good to be true...

Most cartridge pool filters are now back flush capable. Apparently someone got smart and added O-rings to cellulose cartridge top and bottom and incorporated a manifold so flow could be reversed. My buddy tells me it works great and no more having to get yourself wet and spilling chlorine sludge on the lawn. Now it all just goes sludge goes down the storm drain (nice).

The technology has been around for decades for heavy industry, commercial and military applications. When it comes to the buying public however its just a matter of marketing advertising perception that implies a need based on the lowest manufacturing cost and the highest possible amount of money they can get the public to pay for it.

So unless their is a market for back flushing home aquarium filters, no one but tiny companies are going to try and make them and usually more of a gimmick then anything that can actually work. I mean just watching the hose and bucket routine was enough work that I could have beat her by pulling my HOB cart out squeezing by hand in a bucked and placing it back in way before she would be finished braking out the flooding gear, cleaning it and stowing it. Id have dinner cooked already;)

Boy these post comments are fun and remind me so much of my comments at weekly military staff meetings LOL.:rofl:
 
someone has to be the 1st to sell a new item.....i dont think 40 companies all released a canister filter at the same time in the beginning.......who know's i might just have to get a pair and see if they are any good that could be a good excuse to set up another tank LOL
 
Im just the opposite and a firm believer in never buying a new product and or major model change until the new product buyers test them out first and experiences all the problems and petition all the necessary recalls.

Then when the proceeding years models have worked out all the bugs and included all the fixes, I might consider buying if and only when the price to manufacturing ration has reached is apex or lowest price.

Im still waiting to buy my first flat screen TV and holding out for 60" at a cost of about $500. In the meantime Im still using my CRT TV.
 
It doesn't use mechanical filtration but instead uses the process of primary settlement of solids, a tried and true process in the wastewater treatment field. I just got a freebie to check out.(Thanks Harvey and Phil!) Haven't put it on a tank yet but I'll post my experience with it.

I think the reason for the high price tag is that there will be no residual profits from the sale of cartridges.
