New Nano Reef Diary, the sequel

LOL Blinky being the cheapo I am, I've got 2 jebo's and haven't had any issues with them although I've seen alot of people arguing otherwise. (luck?) Beacause they are cheap and massed produced, they may have flaws but I bought mine from dealers who guarantee the product and have had no problems. (I think most issues are with the sellers who don't back up their sales and send the product out with broken bulbs or bad wiring etc. )

I'm out of pocket now, so new additions have to wait until after Christmas lol :)

Ms Dorothy? If it says aragonite on the bag its good. Some sand has silicate and you don't want that. I'm glad I went with aragonite because I've been battling phosphates and hair algae that might of been alot worse with a sand that has silicate in it.

MrsDorothy, thanks for letting me know that you're enjoying this thread, I worry that it's interesting only to me! If anyone can gain anything from my experiences along the way I think that's teriffic : D

Okay guys, it's random picture time again. I can't seem to get the colours right - I don't like to use any computer programs to 'correct' them, but the corals always come out looking much duller and browner than they look in person.

The obligatory FTS:

The little (favites?) hitchhiker - getting more colourful by the day as it regains its symbiotic zooxanthellae, I'm amazed at its recovery rate:

Some new zoas - there's one frag with four different (but similar) colour variations, and the other pink frag just glows electric under actinics:

The hammer seems quite comfy now, it's taking food and opening up nicely in the daytime:

Here's the bubble, and Horace the new turbo:

These are some green and burgundy zoas (they look brown here, but the skirts are really sort of red wine coloured) that were originally surrounded by brown/orange zoas that threatened to overtake them (and the tank). I fragged the greens out of the centre, and they started growing nicely. Then, all of a sudden, a few brown/orange polyps began to appear! I disliked them before, but now I find their milk chocolate colour sort of appealing :)

Here's the new pink-tipped frogspawn. It's not flashy like some of the greens I've seen, but I quite like its shape and as you all probably know by now I'm rather partial to pink ; )

The tank seems to be doing well, the Chaeto in the fuge is growing and PO4 is staying near zero now without much help from adsorbing resins. All the corals look good except for the bleached brain which is now refusing all foods both day and night. I'm going to continue trying to feed it but I'm losing hope for it - if it won't eat, it's not going to recover : (

I witnessed the most bizarre thing today - the maroon and the clown goby had a knock-down blowout FIGHT over the fox coral. I suppose it's been building for a while now, and I might have expected some attitude from a maroon, but this little goby is NASTY! The maroon must weigh at least four times as much but the goby kicked his butt, no contest. Poor thing can't understand why every time he tries to host the fox something darts out and bites him!

That's it for tonight, enjoy : D

Blinky, looking at your tank pictures is making me impatient. But, I know I must wait until I feel that I have enough knowledge before setting it up, and I still need a couple of pieces of equipment. They did not have the tank that I wanted in stock, but it will be in within 2 weeks, then I will be about ready to set up.

I decided to go with the 50g instead of the 40g breeder with a dsb which will still equal out to less then 40g after the dsb is added.

I can't wait to see it :D
DSB is something I haven't tried (doesn't work in nanos, not enough surface area) but have considered if I convert my 65g to marine. I'd love it if you start a diary so I can follow along and see how it goes. Have you checked out www.reefcentral.com? Loads of info there and LOTS of debating of BB (bare bottom) vs. DSB tanks if you're interested :)

For the past 3 months I have been doing a lot of reading here, reef central and at saltwater fish. That's why I decided to go with the 50g instead of the 40g to give me the extra height. Reef central is where I got the idea of a dsb. I am doing as much research as I can before I set up.

Around here, lfs don't usually carry the 50g in stock, they had to order it for me. He said that it would be in in about 2 weeks.

Ms. Dorothy. I've been checking out thigs at my marine store and noticed all the display tanks are long and somewhat shallow. No more than 20 inches tall. Lighting a shallow tank is much easier and gives nice results. I tend to lean toward long tanks. I like to see the fish swimming long distances without stopping, especially saltwater fish, as most are really active swimmers. Just a thought.

Thanks Swimfins. I only have about 48" of space to work with in my fish room right now. I already have 9 tanks, all freshwater. The 50g is 36 x 18 x 18. I have 192 watts of pc lighting (coralife). With a dsb, it will average out to about 40g. This will be my first salty.
