New Nano!

duh!

You have a sump! That means the wonderful world of in-sump skimmers is available. Some days I can be slow.

CPR makes an in-sump model, the SR2, and it's cheaper than the bakpak.

AquaC makes the Urchin, which is an even better skimmer.

I have had my skimmer on a timer, being off for a good bit of the night, and there was never a problem. I think it even helped keep the venturi free of salt creep. On my 20, the bakpak was the noisiest piece of equipment, but wasn't all that bad.

I guess I'd go for the mag3. You can always throttle down, but you can't really add power if you need more circulation.

you might not like how the black backround looks after awhile, try to find pictures of ones painted black comared to blue or a lighter color before you do anything.

aha! thanks for the in-sump suggestions. I believe I'll be going with the SR2, as I'm trying to get everythingto be kind of middle of the line. not too expensive, but still quite effective.

Thanks for all your help! I'll come back if I have any more questions, or if I have pictures :)

ok I have a question now! I am going to order the lights tomorrow. 4x13w power compact 50/50's. Can I put 4 in the hood or do you think that 52 watts would be too much light to put over a 5.5?
If you think 39 watts is a better amount of light for a 5.5, then I planned to put the extra 13w over the sump as a fuge light. maybe grow some sort of macroalgae as a nutrient sink. would one 13w pc be enough? oh, the confusion!

all depends on what type of corals you plan on keeping. if you plan on keeping higher light corals, i would go for the 4x13, if not i would go with just 3 because it will make less evaporation .

You'll probably be fine with 3X13 over the main tank, but I really have no idea.

13 watts over the fuge may be OK, but yours will be kind of deep, right? I had a little 13 watt Jalli light over my HOB fuge, and the chaeto grew very well, but it was right under the light. On the new fuge, I just got a couple of 19W screw-in PC floods and some cheap sockets, and boy do the macros love it.

I think I'll go with the 4x13 so I can get more coralline growth and be able to get corals with about any light requirement. I don't think it'll add much heat, since the top will be about 90% covered by acrylic and the hood will have lots of ventilation. 1 or 2 strategically placed fans. Well they won't be here for about a week either so I have time to change my mind. Oh and the first set of pictures will be coming tonight. I'll be building the overflow. :D

(coraline algae is also because of constant calcium levels, so i'm told)
