New petco policy...here anyhow

The petco near us has a salt-water fish section. Thankfully one of their fish-folk is a dedicated salt-water keeper, but I still feel pretty bad for the fish.
The last time I was in there was a moron in there allowing his girlfriend to pick out a new fish for his saltwater tank based on which one she thought was "cute". She was trying to decide between a clown, a damsel and a lionfish. I left before hearing whether the "nemo" or "the blue one that would match my vase" won out. The lionfish was lucky and got bumped off the list for being too expensive.

the 3 larger pet chains around here all have a store within driving distance that has SW fish.

Lol, the conversations you can hear! I think everyone has at least one story about clueless people buying fish. My favorite was the guy who started picking out fish like they were gumballs, ‘I want one of these, one of those, and two of these..’ He had already picked out a few livebearers and had moved onto cichlids when the lady pulling the fish stopped him after he asked for two baby Oscars and an electric lab. From the little I could over hear he had just set-up a 20 gallon and really wanted Oscars because they ate live fish and it would be cool to watch…*sigh* To her credit she quickly put a stop to his buying, explained compatibility/ size issues and sent him home with just a few of the livebearers …he was NOT happy when he left the store…

We have saltwater too in petco only, not petsmart. And much like you all have said, there are some real clueless people out there. However I like the story about the "blue one that will match my vase". I can't believe people base thier purchases off of the color of thier decor in thier houses!

I know that there is only 1 employee at petco that has a full sw tank, and anytime that a person wants to purchase or ask a questions in regards to the sw fish they call him whether he is at work or at home. It is funny, but he doesn't seem to mind. He is really smart when it comes to the SW tanks.

I know that petsmart here doesn't have a policy, you can walk in and walk out w/ as many fish as your hands, cart, or whatever can carry! That is why I liked the petco policy when I heard they were doing it.

the petco where i used to get all my fish has basically the same policy, though i am not sure about the store credit part. I bought 3 fish there one night and with in 2 days all were dead. i tested my water at home and everything was perfect, i took a sample to them when returning the dead fish and they told me that 2 things were way too high, but they still let me exchange the fish for more.

Never heard of a chain selling saltwater fish, that would just be horrible.
I know that recently my local Petco was upgraded to an "aquatic superstore"(A somewhat exaggerated title) and has an equal number of salt and freshwater tanks. Though I don't know much about SW, it looks like they take pretty good care of the fish, as I never see any dead carcasses in there.

I haven't seen any dead ones in the FW or the SW tanks. Infact everytime I go in there somebody is always working on the aquariums. They have 4 QT tanks and one of them is designated to Ich only!

Somewhat impressive.
