New project: Seagrass/Seahorse tank

The skimmer is easy to operate, but rather big and clumsy. I miss my bakpak. I got a lot of fizz at first, but it has calmed down over the course of a day.

So here it is now. Pretty sparse, but all but a few of the turtle grass plants I got have survived and are growing. The stargrass is also doing well. There are a few surviving manatee grasses, but it looks like the widgeon grass was a bust.

A few shots closer up.

Well, maybe I'm on my way. If things stay OK, I'll add a few gorgonian frags from the other tank for hitching posts.

As of this morning, the parameters were:
pH 8.0
specific gravity: 1.022 (didn't mention the little accident with the autotopoff...)
alkalnity: 4.4 mEq/L (need to cut back on vinegar in autotopoff)
NO3: 10 ppm (about where I want it)
Ca: 360 (will probably go up when alk comes down)

Cool. :) Where's the ponies at?

I'm hoping I can find some seagrasses. I think I can get the 'reidi' seahorses that I'd like to keep with pipefish. I'm not sure how easy it will be to get the sea grasses here in the great white north, but I'll bug my marine stores and see what happens.

Thanks for the links Mo (may I call you Mo?) :)
If I can't find the plants here, maybe I can have a marine store here import from one of the sources. I am going to research and probably start the tank up in the new year. This will be fun. Can't wait to see your 'ponies'.
I'm considering an Australian seahorse like Barbouri (available from a breeder here) and Australian banded pipefish. I thnk this will work as there are breeders located in Ontario.

This tank will be a bit pricey, but probably cheaper than the 90 gallon that is my hearts desire (oh well, no more space here anyway sigh..)

Mo, mog, Dave, I'll answer to just about anything.

I would love to do pipefish, but can't deal with providing live food all the time. I figure the fuge will provide snacks, but otherwise the SHs will have to be happy with fozen.

I think I'll start with the pipefish since they're the most difficult. I saw some beauties once and was intrigued. But of course seting up the new tank and stabilizing it and geting the plants will be first step.
I found someone else in a Canadian Marine forum who is starting up a pony tank so that's cool. I'm keeping an eye open here for your new developments as well. I think if it goes well, I might nix my plans for a large reeftank and try my hand at pony breeding for 'fun and profit' lol :)

Mo,

I can no longer sit idle by, I've been watching this post for a while and I think it's awesome what you are doing. I can't wait to see the horses.
