You know, it might be worthwhile to stick some crypts or anubias or fern on rocks around the bases of your stem plant groves. After they've been there a while, they're going to get shaggy at the bottom, and some good midground plants would cover that up.

And that raises a good question... I have not been very happy with the behavior of the crypts that I put in the tank; not so much a melt as much as not really worthwhile growth vs. the skyrocket lushness of the grass, hygro, etc. Anubias are not SE Asian biotope appropriate
..... so I'm open to suggestions for another more suitable mid-ground plant that is generally hardy (my fish love to forage hard through all the vegetation) and SE Asian native.

Hmm. Have you tried C. lutea or becketii? I've found that C. wendtii is really sensitive to lighting levels. If it's in a shaded area in a well lit tank, it grows much better than if it's in the open. I planted some swordplants in my loach tank in such a way that they shaded an area where crypts were barely visible, and all of a sudden the crypts sprang to life and started growing toward the lights.
Another thing you could use, I think, is Java Fern on small rocks. I believe that's pan-tropical at this point.
FAIL for me on the Anubias. Wasn't thinking.
