I have been keeping tropical fish for many years (mostly Discus and Phiranha). I have a 48 gallon tank which I would like to convert to a marine tank.
My LFS has suggested the follwing to do the following to convert my tank. They will remove the internal filter and drill a 43m Hole in the right hand corner. The pipe work is 32m and takes the water to the Trickle filter in the right cabinet. This is filled with Bio Balls. The water flows from the right cabinet to the left via a 32m pipe. The Return pump an Ehiem 1250 fits in the sump as does the Ratz Protien skimmer. The water is pumped back to the tank with 20m pipe. The heater 300W is in the tank. Two Power heads are fitted in the tank to give water. Two Zoom tubes 10K are fitted. 10kg live sand and 20kg live rock.

Please let me know if anything is needed from this set up and what stocking levels you would suggest, I will appreciate it if you can give me your thoughts on fish selection.

Ok, let me ask you a few question before anyone tries to answer yours . What sort of set up do you want? Reef , fish only etc? It will have a lot of bearing on the expense you're about to have and on what you need. Do you have a plan for how your set up is going to look what fish you want etc. If so post it if not make one up you'll save your self lots of time money etc.

Chris,

I was thingking of having live rock, a few clownfish(anemosfish), angelfish and surgeonfish (Tangs) with 3 or 4 inertebrates not sure which ones but most probably something that is suitable for beginners and will go with my fish selection.

Please let me know if the set up I posted and the fish selection will work well together and if there is anything else required?

What the LFS suggests will work for you, but there are other options. My favorite, which is a lot simpler, is to use 1.5-2 lbs of live rock per gallon as your biofiltration, rather than the bioballs. I agree with your LFS about the powereheads.

If you are willing to spend the money, having them drill the tank and plumb in a sump is a great idea. I would put a protein skimmer and your heater there.

The clowns will work in the tank, and a dwarf angel, but surgeons get too big and need too much room to move.

Good invertebrate choices would be skunk cleaner shrimp, serpent star, a cleaning crew with a good collection of snails, maybe a few hermits. There are other choices as well.

Dave,

Thank you for the info, how many fish would you suggest would live comfartably in this proposed set up? Is there anything else that I will need or what you can recommend to make this tank best possible?

Andre

It really depends on who is in the mix. Two clowns, a dwarf angel, plus a gramma or a couple of cardinals would be nice. A few small gobies could fit in as well. There are tons of other possible combinations.

Dave,

Would one be able to put one or two lion fish in my set up on their own with a shrimp and snails?
