I finally got my 40 gallon tank! It is huge but everyone says that by next year I will want a larger one. LOL

Just put some water in the tank to level it. I am putting my two Clown Loaches, 4 cory cats, 10 neons and 10 or so ghost shrimp in it as soon as I cycle it.
Any suggestions? I was thinking sand as substrate but I guess gravel is a better idea.

nice tree, where did you get it? good setup as far as the fish go. id recommend sand for the bottom feeders and the shrimp and it would look alot better than gravel, granted its more work to maintain. id add a small pleco that wont get too big for the tank. maybe some pearl or gold gouramis?? those would look nice in a tank like this one and they wont eventually outgrow it. what kind of corys are you putting in there?

I have 2 albinos and 2 spotted corys.

It'll be more like 6months before you want to upgrade, lol. Nice tank btw.

Ghost shrimps will never work with loaches. Please remember loaches relish invertebrates so inverts are practically out of the question for that setup. If I were you, replace the clown loaches with Botia striata or Botia kubotai. Both are smaller and you won't have issues upgrading soon. Keep 5 as the minimum per species for best results.

No gold gouramis, they get too big/mean for a 40. Pearls will work great in your tank. Planning on planting? Your fish will enjoy it.
Add one more of each type of cory. They prefer to school with cories of the same species. They'll still swim about with each other, but but you'll have two mini schools in your tank. I've got the same, and the fish are happier.

They're labeled as middle-tank dwellers, so you could go for something that inhabits the top of the tank. Maybe livebearers or hatchetfish, provided you have a covered tank.

Id say you will want a larger tank once yopu have finished stocking the first. That's just my experience.... :-)

Definitely drop the clown idea unless you are certain you will have a larger tank for them as they come into their adult length.

Congrats on the new tank, good advice offered above. I have to second that inverts won't work with clown loaches and that clown loaches will need a much larger tank in teh future. I belive you can keep inverts with kuhli loaches, if you want both you might consider trying them.
