Okay, well the other day, I was rumaging through some old stuff in my garage and stumbled across an old 20 gallon long aquarium that I used to keep a rat in a few years back. If you could answer the following questions that I have regarding this, that would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks.

1) Is it okay to keep fish in this aquarium even though a rat was previously kept in it (of course I'll wash it thoroughly with no soap)

2) Here is a list of fish that I found at the fish stores in my area that I liked and thought could possibly go in this aquarium. I really would like ( as shown in this list) to have a little more uncommon fish rather than just the typical school of neons, etc. I know that I obviously can't keep all of these fish in here (that's a given), but can you recommend which would be best together and in what quantities?

The List:

*Pearl Gourami
*Kuhlii Loach
Flame Tetra
*Spotted Raphael Catfish
Glowlight Tetra
*Rummny Nose Tetra
*Oto
Longfin Red Minor Tetra
Lamp Eye Tetra
*Boesmani Rainbowfish
Australian Rainbowfish
Silver Hatchetfish
South American Bumblebee Catfish
Angelicus Botia (Burmese Border Loach)

*Favorites

Also, I have recently become a big fan of catfish. If there are any cool catfish that could go in here that are a little unuaul or interesting looking, I would love to be told what they are.

Thank you very much,
Evan :dive2:

ofcourse you can reuse it, just make sure of the following before filling it with water:

1.) make sure the rat hasn't chewed threw the silicone sealant or damaged it. inspect the interior and if there is significant silicone sealant chews, peel it out and reseal it.
2.) make sure the glass is aquarium grade thickness. they have tanks for reptile terraniums that is not designed to be filled entirely with water since the glass is thinner.
3.) when you do fill it with water, check for leaks, small and large.
4.) you can use a bleach/water dillution to wash out any lingering bacteria and grime, which will basically kill anything. rinse throughly and when you do fill the tank with water, give your slightly higher than normal dose of water conditioner, and the chlorine should be entirely removed from the water.

as for stock, a 20G long gives you a pretty wide range of fish. a school of 7 or 8 rummy nose tetras, a dwarf gourami as centerpiece and some otos would look really nice IMO.

depends what your water conditioner is. Seachem's Prime can be safely dosed 5x times its normal recommendation, but you won't need nearly that much. as long as you rinse well and allow to dry, i would feel safe with either the recommended dosage, or slightly below twice the amount.

I let mine soak for a couple of days with the bleach/water. Then I start washing with hot water and then soak a few days with plain water dump and then a couple more days with plain water. This should make it safe. Never had any problems before except when I forgot to remove the rat. J/K

What is the best stocking for this 20 gal. long? See the list above for fish that I really like and have access to. Also, if you personally have ideas for stocking that would do well in this tank, that'd be great. Any and all ideas are welcome.
Thanks!
