I've had my 10 gallon tank set-up for over a month with danios in it. I added three fish to the tank ( 2 dwarf guami's and a cherry barb) and they were dead the next morning!! What happened?? I test my nitrite and nitrate levels and they read normal for the comparison chart. I don't know the numbers. I read in my Aqaurium magazine that I might be suffering from "New Tank Syndrome". I did a 75% water change and didn't add any chemicals to the water. I refilled the tank with aged distilled water and put my danios back in. This morning, the tank water is crystal clear and the danios seem to be doing fine still. Did my ammonia levels spike after putting the new fish in? I went out and bought an ammoia alert tester to put in my tank to let me know if ammonia levels get high again. Before I did the water change, the reader was telling me that the levels of ammonia were toxic and this morning, it said they were back down to the "safe" zone. What can I do to help my tank mature properly and be able to add more fish? Am I feeding them too often (7 in the morning and 7 at night)? I have ghost shrimp to help clean up what the danios don't eat. Thanks for any advice on how to keep this from happening again!
