New Tank Syndrome???

I've had my 10 gallon tank set-up for over a month with danios in it. I added three fish to the tank ( 2 dwarf guami's and a cherry barb) and they were dead the next morning!! What happened?? I test my nitrite and nitrate levels and they read normal for the comparison chart. I don't know the numbers. I read in my Aqaurium magazine that I might be suffering from "New Tank Syndrome". I did a 75% water change and didn't add any chemicals to the water. I refilled the tank with aged distilled water and put my danios back in. This morning, the tank water is crystal clear and the danios seem to be doing fine still. Did my ammonia levels spike after putting the new fish in? I went out and bought an ammoia alert tester to put in my tank to let me know if ammonia levels get high again. Before I did the water change, the reader was telling me that the levels of ammonia were toxic and this morning, it said they were back down to the "safe" zone. What can I do to help my tank mature properly and be able to add more fish? Am I feeding them too often (7 in the morning and 7 at night)? I have ghost shrimp to help clean up what the danios don't eat. Thanks for any advice on how to keep this from happening again!

Yu need t get you some test kits for nitrite. What were the 3 you put in there with your danios, are you dechlorinanting your wter?

Mcv-it was edited after our posts;) Get a test for nitrite and nitrate. This will help determine if you are cycled. I know they are tiny, but danios are fin nippers. I would look for signs of bitemarks on the dead fish. Since they take a few days to get accustomed to the new tank, agression could add to thier stress levels. Like i said earlier, I dont think the water quality would kill the new fish and not the ones in there(I could be wrong though). Did you acclamate your new fish? (And I think you could cut back to one feeding a day.)

I think it was a problem acclimating your new fish. Granted the danios could have killed them, but i dont feel as though they cauld have killed all three overnight. Especially considering the size ratios.

Yes this post was edited after we posted, but thanks for keeping a watchful eye:)
