You need a bulb that will fit your fixture. If you have a 40 watt T-12 fluorescent, you could replace it with a T-8 that is also 4 feet long. It will fit the same fixture and is brighter while using a bit less power. If you have plants, look for a bulb with a spectrum of at least 5000K up to as much as 10000K. That range puts you into noon sunlight or a little more to the blue end with the 10000K. It has nothing to do with brightness, it is a color definition. Basically it is the temperature an object would need to be to glow with a similar color spectrum.
 
Well the bulb still works so I'm sticking with it. I have some plants they kinda look like swords I'm looking to get plants for my 10 gallon that we bought at petsmart was a combo top fin deal im looking to put plants but i just want plants that will grow with the light i dont want to use co2 and stuff. any suggestions i would appreciate thanks in advance.
