Newbie Oddball Stocking

Okay, figured. Maybe the problem is the cichlids, would there be another better big, colorful, active centerpiece that I could keep a pair of that would be more peaceful and not necessarily a cichlid.

The gouramies would be safe--they squabble, but I've not seen them injure or eat smaller fish, and they're quite active fish, just not as big.

what about angels? if I got a pair of those and like 10 cardinals would that work?

Angels eat neons in the wild. Usually they won't go after cardinals since they're a bit larger. Like the red points, if they pair up and breed they will terrorize everything else in there, though.

okay, what about bigger tetras like bleeding hearts or black skirts?

I'm not sure what you're asking. If the angels pair up, they will chase after and attack everything else in the tank, no matter what size it is. They're unlikely to cardinals, or any of the larger tetras.

Okay, I was just wondering if the larger tetras would be safer just to make sure that they don't get eaten

Larger tetras should be fine. I'd recommend getting the largest ones you can find to pair with small or medium angels just to discourage the angels from seeing their tankmates as snacks.

Okay sounds good!
