Newbie w/ 70g, what to stock with?

I just purchased a 70g aquarium and this is my first. It will be set up for freshwater. I've been trying to read as much as I can but one question I have is what size fish should I be looking at? I'm not sure if a fish that will get to 8" would be too much and really not sure how many fish I would want in there but if possible I just wanted a guide as to what size I should work with. Thank you in advance to anyone who can guide me in the right direction.

I'm pretty new too but basically the bigger the fish you get, the less you can have, the smaller you get, the more you can have. Good luck!
 
Hey funny thing is ur really not the only person new to tropical fish keepin that has wondered that! I also wondered the exact same thing! when i was lookin at gettin a bigger tank down the road!

I think it would be good in ur 75g to get bigger fish but also remember that some fish grow HUGH but slow(clown loach) and others can grow HUGH!! if given the space and time! (tiger barbs...and many many more)

Really i think ya should go wit some bigger fish THAT HAVE A CARE LEVEL OF EASY (like a parrot really cool fish http://www.liveaquaria.com/product/prod_Display.cfm?pCatId=1599) with a mix of smaller fish that will grow slower (clown loaches) so u can watch them grow, and others that will stay small (rasboras, neons) BUT make sure that they will not be eatin buy the bigger fish in the tank)

BUT AS I SAID BEFORE...i am also new to this so ya may wanna get advice from other people lol..........p.s. take a long time to choose cause u do not wanna end up not liking the fish u got and then being stuck wit them u wanna enjoy every min of raising them!

It's hard to tell you exactly what you can have in there and how much with out knowing what you want, so do some research see what you like post them here again and people will give you ideas of how many and what's compatible with what.
 
Researching fish is like a neverending novel. I did not realize all the information that is out there.

I read up on Clown Loaches, Tiger Barb, and Blue Gourami. It seems they are compatible with each, no? Can I get a Puffer with these? I really like Puffers but not sure what they go with yet.

Thank you all for helping out here. All the info on the net is overwhelming at times.
 
I would say no to the puffer just because they get very territorial and probably will terrorize the others. The Tiger Barbs need to be in a school of atleast 5 but the more the merrier and I think they would be ok with the other, and the Clown Loaches like to be in groups of about 3. Good luck and keep researching.

One more thing how are you planning on cycling your tank.
 
I don't know about the cycling. The thing is I have no clue about aquariums. I bought a used one that came with a box inside the tank with a couple holes for a filter? A cannister filter, some pvc piping and a clear box with different sections that says Living Reef Systems but I don't know how to work any of it so I have a call into my local fish store to have someone come out and set it up for me and teach me about it. I can't find any how-to's for my equipment so not sure how to use all of it. I'm sure I'll know more once they come out.
 
I did go there and talk to them but I have no idea how to work anything so they said they would come by....$50 hr to set it up and show me how to work everything. I mean, I don't even know where to put the pump and where the hoses go from the filter and how to keep the two holes on the bottom of my tank from leaking. I'm a complete newb and I really should have someone show me so I don't flood my house and/or kill the fish I end up purchasing. Maybe I could post pics of all my equipment and I can get step by step instructions here on how to hook it up LOL
 
FaFa, dont keep tiger barbs with those fish, they are nasty fish and even though they may be ok with a school of 7 or so in a 70, they may start going after the peaceful fish.
