Newbie with Red Cherry Shrimps, need help asap!

Before I got my brigs, I would feed a single pellet to 15 cherry shrimp every other day and no one starved. That was in a mature tank though, plenty of other things to graze on. Since you only have 6 shrimp I'd guess they might not even finish the chunk of pellet you gave them, at least not for quite awhile.

as far as copper most likely it in trace amounts that won't kill your shrimp. Besides I hate to think Hikari, a well-known brand, would screw up so badly in making an invert food that kills inverts :p Sometimes I'll toss in some hikari sinking algae wafers for my shrimp, too, they seem okay with it.

Good luck on the paper :)

Today's update.

There isn't much to post about the development of the 10 gallon. But I've noticed the shrimps REALLY like to climb the mesh siding of the breeder trap 1-2 inches above the waterline. I'm really wondering if they are just bored, exploring, or don't like the water conditions. I woke up this morning to find all 6 of them about 1 inch above the waterline near the output of the Red Sea nano filter. Is that the natural behavior of shrimps to climb stuff or be above the water line?

uh, i have to admit, i have not seen my own red cherries climbing up out of the water. I can't imagine it's a good thing. What are the parameters in their current enclosure?

I agree with pik. Shrimp do like to climb, but I don't think they leave the water for fun and they are very sensitive to water quality. Have you checked the water recently?

pH 7.5
Ammonia between the first 2 color bars on color chart 0-.25 mg/l
Nitrite first color bar on color chart <.3mg/l
Nitrate 0ppm (mg/l)

I assume the small rise in ammonia over the past 2-3 days is from the slight increase in bioload. Otherwise the Nitrite/Nitrate tests are the same as I always test it. I didn't test for GH/KH because I need to get started on my school work.

When I came home this afternoon from class, the shrimp stopped hanging out above the water line. They are so weird. Maybe they are just curious and exploring the surroundings. I did a small 1/4 gallon change just to be on the safe side.

Oh yea, I noticed 3 berried shrimp instead of 1! I'm very excited about that. I noticed 2 shrimps have small yellow'ish eggs by their legs and 1 of them has green'ish eggs by their legs. The baby shrimp is growing larger each day as well!

very odd that only 6 shrimp would cause a spike in a matured tank. The shrimp are extra sensitive to ammonia and nitrite so keep doing water changes to keep the ammonia/nitrite as low as possible.

Congrats on the berried mamas :)

I don't think it's completely from the shrimps. I also placed in the java moss they were shipped with and I noticed small amounts of plant decay that I removed while doing the small water change yesterday.

Update

So when the LFS told me to give them the UPS and Manufacturer's number for the substrate and that my flourite black sand would be in by Friday, they ment that they would call me on Friday and tell me they could not located it. So basicly they put me on hold for 3 days for no reason. Tomorrow afternoon I'll be calling around to see if other LFS will have the substrate I am looking for and I'll finally have some free time to set up the tank.

The cherry shrimp really like hanging around the filter outflow area of the net, grazing on the marimo ball, and swimming around a lot. I've also noticed small black specs falling through the breeder net onto my heater. Is that the shrimp poo? It almost looks like individual grains of sand.

do they look like tiny brown cylinders? If so, you got yourself some fresh shrimp poo :p

btw if your tank keeps reading detectable levels of ammonia and nitrite, keep changing out lots of treated water and overdose on prime, it will help detoxify ammonia and nitrite until your spike runs its course. Sounds like you're really enjoying your new shrimp :)

Yes, they look like small brown cylinders. Whoooo shrimp poo!!! =)

I love the shrimps so much and they are super cute! I haven't had much time lately to just sit and watch them since this week is hectic, but I'd like to sit and watch them all day if i had the chance. I've been contemplating if I should set up a 2.5 invert in my room instead of the 10 gallon invert downstairs in the living room. I mean with 1/2 a dozen shrimp, a 2.5 is more then enough. But from what I read, they populate the tank quickly. Plus I think a 10 gallon shrimp tank would be crazy as heck watching 1000000000000000000000000 shrimp all over the place.

Heck I might just do both and take the lecture from my parents about having too many tanks and wasting so much money haha.
