Newbie with Red Cherry Shrimps, need help asap!

Sounds like they are doing well. As a side note, hornwort is a very inexpensive plant and a great consumer of waste. You could float some of that in your tank as well. Just remember to rinse it thoroughly before putting it in the tank. Just a suggestion. :)

Sorry for the lack of an update.

Update on the 2.5 gallon that had the shrimp, java moss, marimo balls in the breeders net and a betta in the tank. RIP crowntail betta. There was an ammonia spike with no nitrites and high nitrates which I found odd. Since the betta is gone, I've emptied the contents of the breeders net into the 2.5 gallons so the shrimp now have more room to roam and graze. I've increased water changes due to the random spike of ammonia. I do a 15-20% on either Tues. or Thurs. and I do a 40% on Sat. or Sun. I lost 1 shrimp to an unknown cause and most of the babies except 1 vanished. I assume they were eaten by the larger shrimp. So I still have the same amount of shrimp as I started with, 8.

Here are some updated pictures of the 10 gallon set up.

I ended up just ordering Fluorite black sand from Bigals since 3 LFS said they would call and see if their distributors carry that and never called me back and I also drove to every fish store within a 45 min radius of my house and school with no luck.

Filling the tank after rinsing the Fluorite.

As you can see I got lazy rinsing it half way cause there is just so much sand... I gave it 2-3 days to settle and I did some water changes here and there.

I then bought some plants from some of the members of the forum.

I didn't bother to dip the plants before planting them so a few snails ended up hitchhiking over from the plants. I saw 5 baby snails which I sucked up during a water change with an airline hose and placed them in with the shrimp for some 'friends'. Plus I don't think the snails would like the fishless cycle with 5ppm ammonia constantly.

Today is day 3 of the cycle so there isnt much to update on. I find it hard to have time to work on my fish tank. As much as I want to, I always seem so overwhelmed with school work. I try to work on the tank during the weekend for at least an hour.

The Corkscrew/Spiral vals on the left already have 4 runners, and the Jungle Vals also have at least 2-3 runners. Most of the Guppygrass wilted but there are a few pieces here and there that are growing strong and green. The Nana Petites are also growing well as I can see new leaves forming. The Crypt Walkeri's are the only ones that seem to be doing poorly. I saw dimishing health after a few days in the tank and I drove 40 mins to the closest LFS that carried Flourish and Excel to dose the tank. I dose Flourish once a week and the plants seem to be thriving except the Crypt Walkeri's. I also does only 1/2 the recommended amount of Excel due to the possibly 'melting' of the vals.

The Crypt Walkeris had some stem and leaves die off which I just sucked out during a water change but most of them are turning brown, the stem and leaves. One of leaves of the smallest Crypt plant is developing 1-2 holes about 2-3 mm in size. Any idea of what I can do to improve the health? I currently have a 15W light strip over the tank. I also have a desk light that has 2X20W light bulbs on the table to that shines on the 2.5 and on the back of the 10 gallon where the Crypts are located. I thought more light might help.

Also while cleaning a stealth heater, I notcied some slime on the suction cups. I then notice that this slime grows on all rubber like material like the suction cup that holes the thermometer and the suction cups that hold the spray bar and intake. Anyone got any clue what it is or how to get rid of it?

Fishless cycle parameters:
Day 1:
Ammonia - Approx. 4-8 ppm
Nitrite - <.3 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm

Day 2:
Ammonia - Approx. 4-8 ppm
Nitrite - <.3 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm

Day 3 (Today):
Ammonia - 4ppm
Nitrite - .3 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm

I only have plants and I dose Flourish and Excel only. I have not used anything to 'jump start' the cycle. No media from other tanks. No biospira or any liquid bacteria. I've also switched from the Ehiem 2213 to an air driven sponge filter instead before I started the fishless cycle.

Pictures I just took like 5 mins ago.

Crypt Walkeris are not doing so well...

Here are some pictures of the 2.5 gallon that currently hold the Cherry shrimp and the baby snails. I found a baby snail nomming on one of the Corkscrew/Spiral Vals and I added it to the shrimp/snail tank. Total of 6 snails now!

EDIT: The desktop light is 2X40W not 2X20W which is pointed at both the 2.5 and the back of the 10 gallon towards the Crypts.

Just a word of caution here with regard to bettas and cherry shrimp. Monitor them. I had my cherry shrimp in with a feisty betta but as long as the shrimp hid themselves, the betta wouldn't bother them. Once they came out though, he pestered them, and I lost two as the result. I've since set up a separate tank with my remaining cherry and tangerine shrimp. Oddly enough, they're doing fine, but I lost the blackberry shrimp in with them.

Please re-read. There is no more betta housed with the shrimp. Thanks for your concern though, I appreciate it.

Day 4 (4/15):
Ammonia - approx. 2-4 ppm
Nitrite - 0.3-0.8 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm

Is it normal for Nitrites to appear so quickly? With no seeded media, liquid bacteria, or anything. I only have plants and a sponge filter.

Also, to my understanding, Excel is liquid CO2 for the plants correct? Does the irrigation of the water from the air pump that powers my sponge filter assist the CO2 to escape from my tank? Or is that only for air injected CO2 not liquid CO2? *noob*

Day 5 (4/16):
Ammonia - approx. 2-4 ppm
Nitrite - 0.8 ppm
Nitrate - 0 ppm

The Crypt Walkeris do not seem to be doing better. The Corkscrew/Spiral and Jungle Vals have 1-2 new runners.

Can anyone answer my questions from the last couple of posts I made?

Day 6-7:
I did not test water parameters.

Day 8 (4/19)

Ammonia - approx. 1-2 ppm
Nitrites - 1.6-3.3 to 33 ppm
Nitrates - 0-5 ppm

I know it you're not suppose to do water changes or it's not needed to go water changes during a fishless cycle, but I saw a decent amount of dead plant material I wanted to remove so I did a 10-20% water change on the tank. I also added a few drops of ammonia to keep the cycle going.

Retest after 10-20% water change:
Ammonia - 2-4 ppm
Nitrites - 1.6-3.3 to 33 ppm
Nitrates - 1-5 ppm

Can someone answer the questions above.

Is it normal for Nitrates to appear so quickly as well? The Nitrites are still extremely high and have not 'disappeared overnight' like mentioned in the fishless cycle thread.

Day 9 (4/20) <--- lol
Ammonia - 2 ppm
Nitrites - 3.3 to 33 ppm
Nitrates - 5-10 ppm

I will try to update with some pictures tomorrow. Nothing really changed except Crypts still look bad and the Spiral/Corkscrew and Jungle Vals melted a bit and gotten shorter in the 10 gallon. Also the 2.5 gallon that currently house the shrimp and snails tested zero for Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates but I did a 40% water change anyways. I didn't get a chance to count how many shrimp there still are. The larger Cherry shrimp has colored up bright red. I still have a few smaller younger shrimp that are a bit clear.

Day 10 (4/21):
Ammonia - 1-2 ppm
Nitrites - 3.3 to 33 ppm
Nitrates - 10 ppm

Forgot I had a paper to do. =( No pictures until I'm done with that.
