I heard that such a rapid increase in cat fish can lead to an equally rapid decline in social status....

Thats why I keep people fish. Their great, and if you buy them small they won't outgrow the tank. IMO the work best in a paludarium though.

I don't have that problem with the people fish, although they do tend to try escaping a lot. They also don't like it when I pet them.
