I have a 72 gallon bow front oscar tank with two nine inch oscars. I do a 50% water change and gravel vac every weekend. My Nitrate is back up to 40ppm two days after the change. Am I just not doing enough water changes? Please dont respond saying I shouldnt have two oscars in a 72 gallon tank, i know I should probably have a 120. Your help is appreciated.

How often are you doing filter maintenance ? Are you happy you're not over feeding ? Tap Nitrates ?

I feed them every evening a small handfull of hikari medium pellots the bio gold ones. I have not checked my tap, ill do that now. I have a penguin emporer 400 a 280 and a magnum 250 hang on back canister. I change the filters usually every month.

I don't know hardly anything about the filters you're using, so can't say if there is any merit in changing that aspect of it.

You could up the filter maintenance to weekly/fortnightly though and see if that gets you an extra couple of days without a water change...I think basically though they are messy blighters...and ya got two in there :D

Oh one other thing...this stuff works :http://www.everythingforpets.com/polyfilter.pet/use.id.5.item_id.3686.dept.5/

spendy though.

Changing my filters weekly would cost alot more a month...

do you mean just the regular maintenance ? should be no need to change media - just rinse in old tap water until it falls apart.

the polyfilter is certainly a bit pricey - you just need a bit in each filter though. it does help keep nitrates down, in my experience.

How are the nitrates in your 36g? If they are around the same your tap might be at a good amount. I know my tap sits between 5-10ppm, but I can keep my tanks at 10 with bi-weekly 30% changes.

But another thing, 40ppm isnt that bad, it wont bother most fish, unless they're fragile or wild-caught.
