I went to the pet store yesterday to stock up on some plants and I asked the lady if she had any mystery snails I could buy. Here was her response: "Since hurricane Katrina the US government started regulating the sale of snails so unless there is a breeder in your state, the only snails we get in are the ones on the plants and we just hope they grow big." What the heck is up with that?!?! I know I've seen them places so it never really occured to me, but is this the truth? If so that is some serious BS. I am going to one other place today and then I am turning to you all here... She then told me that "Shipping snails across state borders is totally illegal and you face major fines if you're caught.".... It's a SNAIL for God sakes not a mako shark:wall:!!!! Sorry had to rant a little but I was wondering... is she a nut (she looks like it) or is she right?
:help:

Oh and I should add that she swore to me there were NO snail breeders in Connecticut... anyone know for sure?

Some snails are legal to ship without a permit, and some you need permits to ship across state lines. Msjinkzd sells several different types of snails that should can probably ship to you.

I know... if I don't find them today I'm definitely going to order from her. I was just dumbfound. I must have been looking at this lady like she had six heads lol. The US is a very odd place sometimes lol.

Well, a big part of it is that in my experience, a lot of LFS owners don't have a great handle on what actual rules and regulations are for certain things like snails, and also sometimes lacking on basic aquaria knowledge. But, that doesn't stop a lot of them from faking it. There are many stores in CT that sell apple snails that I've seen.

She is correct that ALOT of snails are illegal to ship across state lines. Some you can obtain permits for, like pomacea bridgesii (mystery apple snails). This sounds like a case of misinformation as it has NOTHING to do with Katrina but with the invasive species of plant eating snails that have done damage to local flora in waterways.

Isn't Pomacea bridgesii the only snail you can get a permit for these days? I haven't heard about other snails that require a permit to ship.

You can get a permit for brigs. Spixis, columbian ramshorns, and canas I know are illegal to ship. Other plant eating apple snail species are as well I believe, but I would have to look it up. I have applied 3 times for permits for spixis and columbians and have been denied as they are illegal to ship.

That was what I had heard all other snails they are not requiring permits. I know I have some snails coming my way from over seas and if they were illegal then customs would not even let them in the states.

I know Maine has banned all snails it maybe that she is getting her laws mixed up and the state has banned certain snails on top of those banned by the US. I know a Local LFS somehow got in their head that JD's were banned and in the US. What it was was that the supplier had gotten a bad batch so he stopped selling them for awhile. When the supplier started selling them again this guy was so convinced that they were illegal in the US he would not carry them even if when the supplier told him what was up. It took someone not me because I had given up, going into his shop with a copy of the banned fish in my state and showing it to him to even get him to think about carrying them again. Sad part is I don't think he did. Not that it matters needless to say he is closed now.
