Noisy airpumps driving me mad

put it on something soft, it works done it many times, work like a dream, also try putting the pump in behind something, put as many barriers in between you and that pump as possible

I've put mine in padded Cigar boxes before. Like RTR said, usually most of the noise is coming from the airstone itself. If you have a good pump you can unplug the airline and hardly hear it running but as soon as you hook up an airstone again it becomes noisey. I've seen people actually build DYI mufflers for them out of water bottles and filter floss, LOL, never tried it myself so I can't really say if it works well or not.

I hung mine on a hook on the back of the stand and put a sock around it. I can't even hear it hum.

i have found that most vibration air pumps are about the same. Most of the time the loudest noise is when the pump starts to vibrate something that it is sitting on. I have found the best way for me is to put the pump on the floor. My floor is carpet, and it doesn't vibrate anything. However if you want to do this right you will need to buy some extra hose and an antisiphon device so the pump does not become saturated with water.

i had the same problem and it is an easy one to fix.

all you have to do is rest your pump on a piece of carpet and it will absorb the vibration and kill the noise.

If you want to quiet things down, all of the padding suggestions are valid. if you want to totally silence an air pump it will have to be unplugged and probably stored in a shed somewhere. They simply cannot run silent. I gave up on them years ago, and the only one I run is in my storage room for my water aging barrell. It is hung suspended from a rubber band and if I sit in my office and listen intently I can still hear the hum of the airpump. I would reccomend a penguin powerhead to run your UGF (You might look at RFUG instead of standard) with a good powerhead the undergravel filter will be dead silent. The Rena air pumps are almost silent. You literally have to touch it to make sure its on.

Some of us are neurotic, and there is a difference between silent and almost. The pump I referred to earlier is a rena, and as said it is hanging from a rubber band. I can still hear it and I have a 115g tank between me and it, as well as a wall. I couldn't tell you if I am hearing the actial pump or the bubbles, but It can be heard. The tank with powerheads and cannisters is silent. I do have a very small hum in one light ballast which I'll probably scrap very soon. I do not require a tank be silent always, but hums and drones drive me bonkers.

BTW Chuck, nice to see you again. it's been a while since you've posted unless I missed something. Check out the thread in GCC on the AC picnic this summer. talk your parents into coming along.
