I decided to do something a little fun today, and the kids had yummy stuffed portabella mushrooms!

This is my reverse trio of Home's Hingeback tortoises. They are odd little forest floor tortoises that come from the rainforest margins along rivers and streams. They are semi aquatic and more like box turtles in their needs than grassland, arid or Mediterranean torts.

This is my most outgoing male, Homer. (He is also pictured on my Profile page ;) )

And Elmer, a bit shyer than Homer, but more outgoing than my female.

Homer decided to eat the portabella first. Yum Yum. Down in front is my shy girl, Maude.

Maybe it'll taste EVEN BETTER if I stick my ENTIRE head into it....

Maude, who is a lady of discerning tastes, decided to sample the shrimp first.

LOL, I don't think that mouth could go ANY wider...

Our stuffing today was a delicatessen mixture of the sliced stems of the portabellas, broad leaf plantain, rose buds, cilantro, sliced zuchinni, nettle leaf, red raspberry leaf, red clover flowers and leaves, apple, pear, and bananna, with butternut squash and topped with cooked deviened shrimp :) Want to try some?

LOL, I have never been accused of not feeding my critters well :D

Lol, great pics Kristina! They look very well fed and happy. I'm always glad to see a keeper going above and beyond to provide a varied diet for their pets. I might have to whip up something similar for my box turtles!

VF, those adorable boxies of yours would love it! A lot of people do not realize (I know you do) that a varied diet of fruits, veggies, and fungus are a must for the forest floor loves of our lives! I have tried shrimp and fish with the Hingebacks because I know they gotta find some carrion of those as some point, livin' where they do, and I bet the boxies would love it topped with some red worms!

(Hingies do too :D )

I haven't tried feeding my box turtles shrimp but I'm sure they'd eat them. My water turtles get fed shrimp so I'll have to save a few for the boxies next time.

And yeah, they LOVE earthworm! But if you want to see a box turtle move you should see them go after dusted crickets. It's amazing how nimble they can be running them down. I'll have to take some videos of it sometime.

I know a lady on another forum that has a pic of her boxie, Izzy, diving straight into the substrate after a worm, back legs right up in the air! Absolutely hilarious. I had a rescue baby snapper once, and feeding that little some crickets was a riot, all running around after them with his neck stretched out as far as it could go :D

awwwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!! you're breaking my heart with those pics! my second turtle was a hingeback, and i miss him so much v.v; i used to sit on a stool in front of his tank for hours, watching him eat.

they're adorable, and they eat better than auggie ever did, though i tried very hard to spoil him lol
