Non-aquatic plants they try to sell you

Oddly enuff just got back from petco returning some non aquatic plants. I buy plants I recognize the names of, problem is I recognize the names of non aquatic plants too...

Anyway, Mondo Grass got me, but I suspected it was a trap.

Acorus Species are all non aquatic. I thought it was Vallis. but it wasn't.

Purple Waffle, the plant with the vibrant red/purple leaves with white undersides. Wish I brought my camera.

And this link has some pictures. http://www.plantgeek.net/plantguide_list.php?category=11

Awesome! I fell for Mondo Grass, that Corn Plant and ferns. The ferns died super fast I still have the Grass and the Corn plant in my tank. The grass is actually growing and rooting out but the Corn type plant has done nothing.

I'm never going to my big chain ever again. I even want to return the fish I bought from them yesterday.

I've heard the fern called "african fern" as well. Also, there are many onion-looking plants that are sold that are not aquatic.

Although aquatic, I would like to mention P*tco's "moss balls". These are not marimo balls. This is java moss wrapped around a styrofoam ball (they can really not take the blame, they can just say "It's moss in a ball!"). One way to be sure it is not the real thing is if it is floating and tied to a string.

I asked if the moss balls where just java moss and they said yes. Are you saying there's a moss that grows in spheres?

Mondo grass can be grown in an aquarium, it just needs special attention that most people don't want to do. It is a marginal plant meaning it can tolerate periods of being submerged. The roots of this plant can be submerged indefinitely. It needs to be potted and in the tank so it can be removed every few weeks for a few days to let air get to the roots. Then it can be put back in the tank. Does anyone in the store know how to care for this plant? Doubt it. So if they don't know how can they tell you? I had some for about a year before I gave up on it. It grew at a rate consistent with it's die off. It served me well but I moved on.

I feel for ya... I did the same thing with Mondo grass.

I think falling into the "Mondo grass trap" is one of those rites of passage that anyone who wants live plants in their tank must go through. I fell into it, too. :grinyes:
