Non-aquatic plants they try to sell you

****, just bought a gorgeous bit of that Corn Plant, time to replace it with some amazon sword I suppose.

Well, I just figured out that I've got 2 non-aquatic plants. I feel like an idiot :wall: lol And my friend, her mom, and I went to the pet store when I helped them redo their goldfish tank to get some live plants... The guy at petco showed us the tube of Aqua Fern; he said "Here's some Java Fern!" To which my reply was... "No, it's not." Then.... the idiot says "It's a different variety of Java Fern". My friend got the plant... lol

I just bought a borneo fern yesterday. I'm going back to the lfs tomorrow and asking them why they sold it to me if it's not an aquatic plant. :mad2:
Brad, most stores will not offer you an honest answer and will raise their eyebrows instead.:lipssealedsmilie:

:angryfire: just got some peacock fern yesterday only to find out it's non-aquatic... what's up with that? petsmart has some of the best stuff in my area. :wall:

They may have failed to realize that what they got is not a true aquatic plant. Did you ask for refund?

sure did.... the lady there was a complete JERK about it too.... if it wasnt for the fact that i've had so much better luck with their fish than anyone else's, i'd probably boycott them altogether

Actually...

Aluminum plant (Pilea cadierei) is one that lots of people get suckered into. Its not the customers fault either. The plants are almost always displayed in tanks completely submerged in water and their usually under some vague or misleading tag like "assorted aquatic plant". Its pretty dishonest if you ask me, and it should be illegal.

It IS illegal.

Bottom line is that "buyer beware" is the rule of thumb with most large chain stores, and unfortunately enough small "mom and pop" stores rise up and fall within a year or two which work under the same principal, that they are no better all too often. I much preffer the mom and pop stores though because generally you find at least ONE that deals as honestly as they can and has enough interest in the stuff they sell to LEARN something about it (aside from how much markup they can put on it!).

If you find yoursel having purchased an "aquatic plant" that isn't, print out the webpage or source that proves it's not and take it with you when you return the plants. Ask for the manager, make sure you write down their name as they watch, and advise them that you intend to report this to the better business bearue if you continue to see this item being sold in the store falsely labelled as "aquatic". Ask for the corporate contact info so that you can forward this information higher up. If enough people start coming back on them and taking legal steps through channels that can actually DO something to them, then they might back off on how often they try to scam customers in such a blatent manner. JMO.
