I have a 29-gallon tank with 5 cherry barbs, 4 priscilla tetras and plan to get some platies this weekend. Are there any non-schooling that I can get that will be compatible? I want more fish, but don't think my tank can handle another school.

pearl gourami! as long as the cherrys aren't fin nippers, a pair or trio (two girls and one guy) of pearl gourami would go great in there. they are the fish in my avi. The males have the gold on their chest. they get to about 4 inches long by 2 or 3 tall, and stay rather 'thin'. They are very passive, but don't spend too much time hiding unless there is something overly aggressive in the tank.

I agree with Hebily. Gourami's are a good choice! Maybe some blue rams would be a nice fit too. I have some in my tank with a small school of tetras and some cories and they're doing pretty well.

I love both, but don't have the room for both. Do gouramis do well if they are the only gourami in the tank?

What about blue rams? The LFS owner had 2 males and they were butting heads...can't imagine they were doing it for fun. Can I get 1 male?

I would say in addition to a gourami or ram or whatever you decide, you have room for a school of bottom dwellers- maybe cories or kuhli loaches? I have cories in mine with a school of danios and cardinal tetras, and they're great. :)

Yeah, 1 ram would be fine or 1 gourami. In fact, I would recommend only getting one rather than a breeding pair (and 2 males would just be trouble!). I recently found out just how aggressive even passive cichlids can be when they are breeding. My kribs breed and had babies (1 breeding pair on either end of tank) so that the rest of my fish were getting chased and bullied on all sides. I even lost 2 of my diamond tetras. Breeding fish is best in a species only tank!

Anyway, I would also get a couple more priscilla tetras to round out the school. Schooling fish should always have at least 6, and I think even that is low. IMHO, 8-10 would be better.

Thanks guys!

Anyone got a good way of telling my bf that rams butting heads isn't "cool"? I keep telling him that when they "ram" each other, they're fighting and even though they may not hurt each other, it's probably stressful to them.

I did have 5. I thought that was enough. This is why I love this site. I did lose one, so I'll pick up a few more when I get the glowlight tetras.

I now have cherry 5 barbs (love how playful they are!), 4 (soon to be 6) priscilla tetras and 2 melini corydoras (is that enough for them?). I'm planning to get a school of glowlight tetras and then probably a ram, or honey or pearl gourami.

Can I have both a ram and a gourami in this mix? I'm trying really hard to sort out my tank, but I keep finding fish that I really love...even after all the books and internet searches I've done. ha I'd really like to keep this a peaceful community tank and not overcrowd...although if I had it my way, I'd have a HUUUUGE aquarium with lots of fish. I've since had to put aside hopes of getting swordtails, mollies, platies...I just love them all, but not enough room.

what about apistos yal! oh and i read someone put khoolies, are they active when in a school or do they all hide together, bcuz ive been thinking about maybe trying a small group of them.
