Odyssea CFS 500 Can-filter review and circumference modification

anyone build a spray bar for this? I got the 700 model and its in a 125 and so strong it moves my sand around a lot so gonna have to build a spray bar for ..............

Got my CFS 500 in the mail a couple days ago. I've got the Vaseline out tonight and am planning to work on the stiff valves, though they don't seem prone to failure as long as you're careful from what I can tell -- the plastic "tabs" that stick out are a little flimsy and I can see breaking them though. Will head by Lowes or similar tomorrow and get the correct sized o-rings to replace the ones on the valve connector stems, since they do seem very tight (I haven't even tried to force one on and don't intend to). I'll be getting out the kitchen knife tonight or tomorrow and cutting my sponges as well. Looking forward to it.

Wrong size O rings, a lid that cracks, valves that crack.....I dunno this thing is starting to look more like a POJ. Based on it's defects out-of-the-box, I am wondering how long the motor/impeller will last on these things.
meh... doesn't convince me. people study all day long and follow the opinions of the masses while ignoring the one or two folks that have a clue... and then tie up $40k of their money into pos cars that got good ratings. i don't think a $50 filter is going to hurt the bank too much. then there's products out there that "are the best" that need modifying right out of the box. i have to deal with that with "hobby grade" r/c vehicles since my kids have gotten into the hobby. i buy a $200+ vehicle because it's "the best there is" at that price then have to spend close to $400 in mods for it to run right and do what it's built for... and that's with "bargain" equipment. for a $50 filter that'll outperform most $200+ filters, i think i can take the time to visit home depot... and if the motor goes and i have to buy a new one... i still saved myself $100 overall. a lemon is a lemon no matter what the tag says. i think this thing is worth a shot if you know what to do (thanks gunner).

It's not the cost of the filter that is relevant, it's the cost of the fish should it fail at the worst time, which a man named Murphy says it will do just that.

I can tell you that the two CFS500 I have modified for each of my 80 tanks are functioning great with the $5 cost in modified upgrades and has placed the performance of this filter just behind the FX5 circumference filter. The mods have offset hundreds in cost by allowing me to replace existing FX5's on larger 200+ tanks, not having to buy more FX5's. Circumference modified 1 of these filters can handle up to a 150 tank easily and with far more endurance then any stacked filter costing hundreds more. Personally Id rather have results and save lots of money.

Gunner, do you feel this would be a good filter on a 125G Goldfish tank with 7 goldies in it? I have a Rena XP3 and a Fluval 404 on it. I want to replace the fluval for a better filter. is the modified CFS-500 able to handle a bulk of a well stocked 125G with messy fish?
I will head to Home Depot and get the O-rings and the washers/pads to help the lid problem.

I was doing some digging and found out that the CFS-700-1200 all use a 2600L/PH (700G/PH) pump compared to the 500's 1800L/PH (500G/PH) pump. Is it worth the 20 bucks extra for the addition pump output?

If you are running another filter, I think you should be fine with the smaller pump. However if you might just go with the CFS as the only filter in the future, you might want to go with a bigger model(if the extra cost is only $20).
