First let me start by saying that I am currently running a Dell Dimension 2400 bought back in 2003. It has less than 1 gb of ram (and won't hold anymore) and a 40 gb hard drive. It has Windows XP.

Now, I am looking at buying a laptop from Dell. They have the Inspiron 15 on sale until 6 am 2/25/10. I have been reading until my head spins and still do not know if the $399 model is sufficient or if the $499 model is what I should get.

Understand that I am not a gamer, I do not run anymore on the computer than Firefox and Thunderbird at the same time, with the occasional look at My Documents during tax time while filing them online. I use works for word proccessing, spreadsheets, etc.

Also understand that I will be buying a Dell as my little brother is a Engineer for that company and any tech support needed will provided by him (at his home number).

I would ask him but he is busy with a wife who has had the nerve to be in the hospital while I am having this problem. Imagine him wanting to be there!

So your opinions please. The is the Dell webpage http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/laptop_great_deals?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs&redirect=1

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your help.

The laptop you currently have will do all of this.

If you just want nicer, newer computer, then any of them will do this tasks as well.

My computer (it is a desktop with an old fashion monitor that takes up the whole desk) is just slower than......

So, the "smallest" will be plenty for my purposes?

snoopy, let me cast 1 vote for the $499 machine. You do not seem like a person who upgrades/changes computers very often (7 yrs is like Late Jurassic in computer time :) ) so the way to think about it is not, what do I need today? but What am I going to need 5 or 6 or 7 years from now.

IMHO the $100 price difference is worth it for the 1 gig bigger memory and nearly twice the size hard drive. Webcams I consider Teh Evil but you can always stick a piece of tape over the lens until such time as you find a use for this. Everything else seems pretty much the same but those two factors come into play as newer software is always gobbling up more speed and space.

ymmv of course. Disclosure: I use Dell (desktop; have never had one of their laptops and have pretty much given up on lappies in general anyway as they fall apart in a deplorably short time) but have no other connection with the company.

newegg.com is an awesome place to buy from coming from a guy who works in IT.

ill 3rd newegg.... return policy on open box items meaning you open it and want to return it for any other reason then it doesnt work. you get a item doa they exchange with out question.

the cheap one should be fine for you. though if you do want a option or more room for music vids and more ram the other one might be better....

if you really just want something to email and surf the net have you thought about a netbook?

Thanks for clarifying the return policy. I looked at netbooks, but the keypad is too small for my husband's pointer finger (he types with just one). He tried one at Best Buy and kept hitting 2 keys at once. I guess being 6'4" with big hands has it's drawbacks.

After looking on that site, can anyone tell me about the Lenovo G550? Is it reliable, etc? Any glaring drawbacks? Thanks guys.

It very much does, I know.
