ok seriously guys tank size question fantails black moors

the goby

The violet dragon goby doesn't live in fresh water.
It is a warm brackish water fish.

If left in fresh water more than a few months it will get tumors get sick and die horribly
In fact I don't think a single speicies of goby lives in fresh water and none live in cold water.

well had to nix the 75 gallon petco has dollar a gallon event going on again :) got a 55 and 1 black moor 1 gold/ orange *not sure* fantail.

now on next check will be getting marine hob filter prolly 300 bio wheel for ease of buying filter pads *the 37 has a 200 and both use c size cartrages*

the golds will be moved into 55 as soon as the sand is cleaned and placed in it *with a 10 gallon filter temp.

not to hijack the thread, but my son had a ~6 inch goldfish and a ~10 inch violet gobie in his tank for years without problem -- fairly hard water but not salted

alright well it looks like i will tell her *wife* that the stocking would be as follows.

55 gallon = 2
75 gallon = 3

gonna need to set up a sump to handle wastes.

looks like the gold fish will need to be solo given mine and her tastes.
do goldfish do well in planted tanks or do i need to set up a bare tank for them?

Plants would be a nice addition to the tank. Help with waste management to a degree. You just have to pick out super sturdy ones because they are omnivorous. Or floating ones like anachris. Also they love to munch duckweed which I think is pretty.

Also if you go on a short vacation and don't leave them with some sort of food they have been known to eat the hard plants as well. But I think two goldfish (which I have) look dull in a large barren tank. You could even pot the plants to prevent them from digging them up. Which they will do during natural foraging behavior. They will rarely knock pots over though.

Anyway there are few good articles that pop up when you google goldfish and plants that would give you a list of the sturdy ones.

i couldn't agree more about looking barren and she is not the happiest person about the barren potential.

i will be looking up some small fish that will go ok in there to flesh it out use the gold fish as the living center pieces for the tank.

mostly looking as some curly bamboo java moss hair grass etc plust some edibles for them to munch on. i don't really do vacations much so that isn't a consern any vacation is easy to handle though just do a large water change 60% - 70% use neices to come in and feed *the large change is to compensate for over feeding*

and yeah i have been hitting google very hard for all my info on my tanks.

about the goby. pbeemer.

violet dragon gobies are a brackish water fish. they need salt period. they need heat period. individual fish may live in fresh for a while but they will hate their lifes and ultimately die pain fully and ugly. *massive amounts of blood filled tumors* assuming the lack of heat don't kill them. they can survive but never ever thrive. this is also when they are young as they are more inclined toward the fresh water as they grow they need more salt. birth sg 1.001+ midlife .1.005+ old age 1.010 ish +
btw the life span of violet gobies is 15+ years length at adult age 15 - 20 inches in the wild.

a goby who lives in fresh water and dies at 12 inches in 3 years is the same as a 50 pound elementary kids death *developmentally speaking*

not angry just supplying facts it is sad that these and almost all brackish fish are sold as fresh water or "just as a little bit of aquarium salt"

also i see that your are from socal.

putting a violet dragon goby in fresh watter would be like you coming down to work construction here in the imperial valley in august. i do it all the time i love it but i was made here for that. :)

I have my fancies in with my white cloud mountain minnows. The minnows do get to the food first, but I only have 10 or so in with them. As far as plants....they like to eat them. Except the anubias and they do try and tear that.

There is some extra large curly bamboo on amazon you could order. Put it in a nice but not to expensive vase or a betta bowl and it could look really beautiful as the fish swim around it. I wanted to do this in my goldfish tank before I realized it was really too small to keep the goldies in.

figgure i will sneak some java fern , java moss, and water sprite in there. with all the waste that goldfish produce it should act like a good fertilizer for them so that i have healthy plants right before i acclimate them to the brackish tank.

as far as the bamboo goes it is up to wife but she is leaning towards it being the curly kind and the local petco stocks them is a pretty decent size so hopefully :)

I have 2 goldies (1 calico & 1 moore) in a 75 gal. My calico is a plant eater so I ended up having the bamboo idea too but never got a vase set up yet and it's bee quite happy stuck in the back of the hob filter. That helped out major with an algae prob I had for a while. Once the goldies get bigger the tank won't look as empty my 2 1/2 year olds are now huge. I got a clump of fake fern looking stuff to hide tubes and the calico rearranges as she sees fit.

Don't put any smaller fish in the tank. I had a friend with an over load of mollies and I put some of the larger fry...I would have sworn the goldfish couldn't get a mouth around in for a while just to have a place to put them. The goldfish grew faster than the mollies...one molly disapeared and a few days later I had a sick goldfish that didn't make it.
