I had difficulty with my first shrimp tank; a ten gallon that was devoted to them. I have found that they do like cooler temps, and now I have them in a 29 gallon community tank as well as a 30 gallon. They have multiplied but I never see the babies.
Sorry I've been slow on an update. Shrimp are still doing great. When they are happy, they apparently do nothing but eat and breed. My initial 25 have become somewhere around 150+ (just a guess as the little ones hide very well). I am assuming the population will max out at some point but don't know yet. I've since added 10 tiger shrimp that appear to be doing well. Someone asked about my fish eating the babies. I have 8 neon tetras and 3 otos that do not bother the shrimp at all ragardless of how small they are. Actually saw one of the tetras spit out one of the fry the other day.
Thanks for the great thread! I've never had shrimp of any kind before, and am seriously considering getting some RCS. The only shrimp you can find locally are ghost shrimp. I may have to order some RCS's now )
Guramis (sp?) and Tiger Barbs would gulp down the shrimpies. They literally attack blood worms when i feed them. Saw a post about temperature??? I have my tanks at 77 right now. I read somewhere here that if you want them to breed, set at 80 or so. Don't yet know as all mine are still juvies.

In my experience, you're good at 77. My tanks at 76 and the RCS are breeding like crazy. Don't know about the tiger shrimp yet as I just got them a couple weeks ago.

I had the same problem finding shrimp locally. One LFS had RCS but wanted 4 bucks a piece. You might consider getting your shrimp at Aquabid where you can probably get them for about $1 a piece. And if you're worried about shipping, I haven't had any problems. They've all shown up alive and healthy.
I gave my mom a few cherry red shrimps in a 2 gallon jar with some least killies and a few small mystery snails a few years ago. She now has 3 jars full from the resulting babies from each.
The jars are glass cookie jars from Walmart to keep her cats from "fishing." They have no heaters or filters and only a single "sunlight" desk lamp for lighting. They each have duckweed, moss balls, pennywort, and Elodea canadensis.I have to regularly remove juvie shrimp from these jars and have been giving them away to friends with aquariums.
