Open top tank fish do's and don'ts

About 2 months as far as I can figure...

I thought "Jack" had him for a snack.

Guess I oughta check under the chair more often!

Ive had that happen with one of my bettas. I thought maybe my cat got ahold of it. and long behold... it was on mt boxspring. My mattress was moved over a little bit and a few days later I found him when I went to change my sheets. =/

Also I have some ID sharks, and Ive read and herd that they can also get out when they come up for that air. At night thats what I hear alot is the waer splish splashing. Its mainly my large pleco though, and I take it the little ones are them lol

Weather/dojo loaches

DEFINATELY spiney eels. We lost 2 peacocks to jumping. Well we found them, but not alive . . .

Has anyone had a cory jump out of the tank? Mine really like to dart up to the surface for air, but my tanks have all been well covered.

My cories have never broken the surface excpet for the air gulp. They have been open top for 2 years now.

List of my jumpers

Tiger Barbs
Paradise Fish
Rope fish (while not a jumper, tries to escape)
Peacock Eel

I had a 3" JD baby jump out of a 2"x 3.5" opening in a QT tank. Found him about an hour later (think I accidently stepped him). He survived for 3 days, swimming, eating a little, sloughing off his slime coat, but he'd been out too long, gave up the ghost :-(

All livebearers except maybe fancy male guppies. Swordtails are especially good jumpers and can aim themselves through fairly small holes.

Why would anyone want an open tank? Speaking as someone who used to have one back in the old days. I lost a lot of fish from suicides from that tank.
