Open top tank fish do's and don'ts

Would a 6" fence above the waterline prevent most fish from jumping out...basically a canopy with sides and no top?

It would probably stop the smaller fish such as neons, but for an arowana it would have to be closer to 6 feet.

I'd say perhaps a fence as high as the fish is long? Or something near that. Like a 4" fish would need atleast a 4" tall 'fence'? Uh oh, a FPL rule (fence per length) . But of course then you have the problem of the fish that can jump unuasually high for thier size. I have done this as well since I usually vent the back of the canopy by simply not having the backing go all the way to the top, making a fence like what your talking about.

I can't imagine any of my bettas breaking the surface, but I'll take all of your word that they can. In my experience the only "escape artists" I've had were rainbow sharks and a blue crayfish I named Houdini.

from experiance i would say bettas.........my betta was flaring at me durnin feedin so i opened my mouth as wide as i could and moved slowly toward the tank.....well in the end Cheese(my betta) won. he jumped straight out the water and tried to bite me....scared the crap out of me, GF gotta big kick out it, and i hav a new respect for Cheese. :help: ( i can hear him stalkin the tank at night, he's goin to get me :( )

Hahahaha, he showed you! XD

...

I'll add upside-down catfish (the small peaceful guys) to the list, I think. I hear mine splash around at least once every few nights, usually about an hour after the lights go out and the food goes in (nocturnal fish).
