I think I covered most of it, but they suggest raising the temp a few degrees and adding some salt as well which makes sense.

The author suggests trying the clean water/vitamin method first w/o the meds. I would treat the tank and/or feed with Metro first and then go from there since you have to do lots of water changes with Metro anway - but that's me. :D

Edit: I'm not sure what to think about the tail. Doesn't look like tail rot, and there are no other fish in the tank... :huh: Also, it maybe the pic but the fish looks a bit thin?

I have always thought my fish looks thin, but he seems to eat like mad... I guess feeding at least a little more wouldn't hurt any! I can't find vita-chem locally, so I have tried using liquid centrum to soak his food in before feeding, but he doesn't really like it... I am going to order some Metro and does that. I have healed his tail twice before using Melafix.... I can't figure that one out at all! It must be some internal disease then that is causing it all! Thanks for all the help!

BTW I am trying to get either a canister filter or another HOB, but need the extra spending cash first!
 
The thinness is common with HITH and Hexamita so feeding more probably won't help right now. The tail could be a secondary infection? Hopefully all problems will clear when you start treatment. Please keep the thread updated and good luck. :thumbsup:
 
I feed each of my Oscars 6 pellets 2X per day. Eating is not always good for them. It is better to sate the hunger than to allow them to over-eat. Fish and Oscars in particular are opportunity eaters. They will eat if food is present regardless if they are hungry or not.

Thank you for all the kind help and encouragement. Things got crazy with the holidays, but I am ordering Metronidazole today. I can't think of anything else to try, so I am hoping it is a heximita. Just to keep this in the same thread, I have another question:

To help with filtration, I am thinking of buying a cheap Penguin Bio-Filter 400 to go on the other side of my Hagen Aquaclear 110 (formerly 500). I don't have much money to spend on another Aquaclear ($79.99) or a canister filter ($150+), so do you think the Penguin is going to be okay? ($49.99)

BTW, this fish is predetermined for illness: He developed Ich immediately after I brought him home (cured), jumped out of his tank in the middle of the night and slid under the stand where I had to literally drag him back out... After I woke up about 20 minutes later... And now HITH! He is quite a fighter!
 
Any added filter will help some but water changes are far better. Along with the medication and the filter, I would also recommend the WC's of a minimum of 30% (+/-) 2X a week until the HITH/LLE clears up.
 
AC's are the best HOB's but if you don't have it... I'd probably wait a few weeks til you do have some extra $$$ as it's not mandatory at the moment - as long as you're doing the WC's as suggested.

He sounds like a tough fish. Keep with the WC's and dose that Metro as required and I'm pretty sure you'll see improvement... maybe slowly, maybe not so slow. He's going to look great when he's nice and healthy. Looking forward to the pics of that, too. :clap:
