Oscar not eating?

loll well i hope mine will stop being shy. sometimes when he thinks im not looking he will swim up and down the glass! but then he lies on his side if i move and he notices. don't think he likes me :(

ust frequent the room often, he will come around. They get very attached to a routine. And even then they seem to have a good "sulk" every now and then.

the tank is in my bedroom near my mirror so hopefully he will like me, i hope he gets friendly with me, i feel bad when he avoids me! he is still no eating the hikari pellets, he puts them in his mouth and spits them out today but he did eat prawns.

Sometimes it takes fish a while to adapt to pellets. The size of the pellet may be an issue as well make sure it isint too big or too small. Oscars like meaty food as well as veggies. Try some veggie treats and see if he likes those. Oscars can be very timid and shy until they warm up and form a routine.

what veggie treats? just veggies blanched or...is there another kind?

Oh, yes...Oscars can be big babies!! Mine is funny as heck, I've had him lay flat on the bottom and the top, he has swam sideways, he has food come out of his gills, he spits things back out, he gets very mad at me when I clean his tank, but he lets me pet him and he takes food from my hand.

As far as the pellets, well...he didn't want them at first either, now this may sound mean, but I didn't feed him anything else for like 3 days, now he gobbles them up as soon as they hit the water. Have you tried the sticks yet? Mine really seems to like them!

As for veggies, mine gets...LOVES zuccinni squash, peas, spinach, didn't care for lettuce, or celery..but did eat carrots too. All blanched.

Good luck, he will come around but as others have said...he is an Oscar, they are very funny fish!!

lol well thank god u said all that Lady G if not i would be still worrying about him. i think he has been eating the pellets because when i wake up they are all gone. i know he loves guppies. yesterday i put a female guppy in the tank and in the night i was starring at him and noticed her red tail sticking out of his mouth lol. so obviously he loves live fish. but he has been eating prawns - chopped up and i put a frozen cube of beef heart in the tank, but he didn't like it so my polypterus ornatipinnis ate it! just got him and he is very active during the day. so far everything is going ok. when i check if the everything is working in my tank Suki (oscar) will lie down on his side and pretend to be dead i think. i don't know how young he is, only that normal female guppy can just about fit into his mouth.

I would watch with the live feeders, I do feed them to mine also...but be sure to Q them first, because you don't want to end up feeding him a fish with any health issues...also limit them to maybe once a week or so, of coarse this is JMO...but it is what I was advised so that is what I do.

You could always just get a 10g to add a few male and female guppies in let them breed and use those as feeders...this way you know the source and it limits the chance of diseased, or sick fish. I haven't done this yet myself, but do plan on starting soon.

As for the frozen cube...try getting some tank water in a cup or something and adding it in there to de-thaw it, then pour it in the tank. He may like it that way...really you should de-thaw any frozen foods before feeding.

everyone in my house has fallen in love with suki!!! but my mum got upset after she saw him eat one of the guppies in my tank lol. he is doing well, and has even started eating his hikari gold pellets. he gets fed tetra spirulina flakes in the morning, prawns in the afternoon and his pellets at night! on other days he gets bloodworms, tropical fish mix (somefrozen cubes thingy) and the cichlid diet (frozen cubes again) do you guys think this is a good feeding thiny? what else can i give him?
